Hi, this is my first posting here, but I've been directed to these forums in the past for other problems and often found what solutions I need. So thanks for being here.

My problem now is seemingly simple, my DVD drive cannot seem to read DVDs (it still reads CDs just fine), after some searching around, I determined that this is probably a problem with my IDE controllers.

I've tried downloading driver packs for those, and for my chipset, I even joined "Driver Headquarters" in order to see exactly what drivers are missing and where to get appropriate new ones.

However, when I try to install new drivers, I get the message "Windows was unable to load installer for hdc." And my new drivers are not installed.

If anyone knows what an hdc is, where to fix an installer for it, or if I simply need to buy new hardware, any help would be awesome, I'm totally out of clues at this point.

Also, if you think I'm going about this the wrong way and that there is some simpler way to fix my DVD drive up, then please tell me.

Oh yeah. My system really isn't anything to shout about, it's an old computer that's had a few upgrades.
I've got a 2.6ghz Intel celeron processor,
2x 256mb of DDR-SDRAM
An ATI Radeon 9200 SE series graphics card
A tiny little 15GB hard drive
My DVD drive is an HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8162B
My Mainboard is an AOpen (AC4SPE-N)
My chipset is apparently an i865/i848P
And my OS is WindowsXP Professional (SP2)

Like I said, pretty pathetic.

How can it be a 865 and 848 chipset at the same time ? Please clarify. Also, the model of the MOBO that you've posted does not come up even in AOpen's global website. Please check and revert. Did you try loading the drivers in Safe Mode ? If not try doing that. BTW, which DVDs does the drive not read : All DVDs (Both factory pressed and burn-at-home DVDs) or either of the 2 ?

I don't remember exactly what chipset I got, so I used a program to give me my system details, that's what it said, so I assumed they were similar. Sorry that I can't be more specific about that. I made a typo with the motherboard though, it's an AX4SPE-N.

I tried the safe mode approach and it didn't work.

I don't have a DVD writer, so all my DVDs are store bought. Mostly, I'm even using just PC games on DVDs, not so much movies. The last two I had on DVDs were very problematic.

Now however, I'm officially baffled. It seems that while I went out, my little brother installed Command and Conquer: The first decade without any problems from a DVD, and I can read that one just fine. But not the other two I have handy. I did check them on another computer and they worked there, so I know I'm not dealing with defective DVDs. I'll have to dig up a few more DVDs and see how they work.

Are the two that don't work scratched? If so, it is quite possible that they can be read by one drive and not by another.

Deejay = :( ,
You dont need any ide drivers for intel i865.
chipset. MS windows has them built in.

most probably ur dvd drive needs a simple lens cleaning ...thats all.

clean the lens (or get it cleaned) and post back ur observations.

Well, thanks for all your help guys. I went out and bought a new DVD drive, and it works fine now.

This does not solve the mystery of the missing driver installer, but I'm just going to hope that it doesn't rear its ugly head again till I'm ready to get a new computer anyway.

So, thanks a ton.

I just had the same problem with my Benq1620 pro after 1 week of purchase.

Got that replaced......freaking crazy problem that was, however that replaced 1620 is working good till now!
