Java 7 Plugin Causing Firefox Crash on Windows 7/Vista

This is happening on many of the office machines. With Java 7u4 (JRE) 32bit installed on Win 7/Vista, Firefox crashes/hangs when ever a page with a Java applet is loaded. The crash itself seems to be happening when the browser plugin is getting initialized. If I downgrade to 6u29, every thing works fine. Tested with Firefox 3.6, 5 and 12.
In fact, even IE occasionally hangs when loading applets with this Java 7

Is there any know issue of this sort for Java 7 releases or is it some sort of configuration/installation issue?
 
there's an update 5 also which is released. try upgrading one machine to this u5 release and see if the problem is solved.
