Hello,
I'm going through this confusion since long time.. Taking Java platform mobile is worth or Symbian Platform is good??
I am currently using N73me which is based on s60 (Symbian :S Lots of Hangs and dukes :bleh: )

I really want to try Java Mobiles.. are they as good as Symbian??

Lol, sorry for laughing.
There is no comparision between Java or Symbian, or to be fair, between Java and any other mobile platform like Windows Mobile.

The native solutions like Symbian or Windows Mobile are much better and feature wise capable than the Java platform.

Your N73 supports java softwares. Java is only an application platform, whereas symbian is your operating system. The java apps are slow (barring very few exceptions), are limited feature wise, and consume a lot of RAM.

Always opt for the native system apps like symbian or windows mobile over java.

And your N73 is hanging? How is that possible? Is it updated to the latest FW v4?

Both are good. And dunno why yourz N73 hangs and dukes, mine doesn't ! I like symbian > java platform. :p

Hmm, I've seen N series mobiles are the one amongst slowest mobile devices. I find my mobile @ good speed when it is loaded with few songs only (about 300-500MB)

but when I add lots of stuff (say above 1GB) in MMC, it starts hanging.. It slows down... blah blah...

That's irritating for me...

It also depends on the phone's processor and amount of virtual memory

I tried the Asus P320 recently , its a 9k device which is loaded with almost all features incl WiFI and GPS but has a slow processor which absolutely kills the device

try some new n series devices like n78, 6220c, n82 ,n79, n85 , n95 8gb .. no issues like hanging or slowing down like ur n73

Java is a platform, symbian an OS. Nokia runs on symbian but is able to run java apps as well. Like alsiladka said, there is no comparison.

java phone ! :ashamed: :S :S i havent heard of any java-phone as such.

hammerhead has put it already. most new phones with symbian (or other) os are capable of running java applications.
so probably you could have compared java applications against native symbian applications (c++ most likely)
S60 phones are much better these days. what makes u say ur N73me was slow and hangs? is it specific app? or the phone OS itself ?

I'm guessing what Rahulrulez means is, he's asking the difference b/w a Series 40 phone and a Series 60 phone.

My suggestion is, if ur into various applications and games go for S60, as it has lots of options compared to S40.

do not compare java and symbian fones

symbian fones are far more superior

if by java phone u mean sony ericsson phones then do note that sony uses UIQ(again based on symbian os) as OS and again java is jst a application platform used on UIQ os.;)

Correct me if I am wrong

Sony Ercisson actually has its own home made OS for it's phones ( some newer model uses Symbian though ) . Symbian is way better for advanced users.. Java based programs are not very system specific, like in SE for example you won't get a program that can password protect SMS folders, hide files etc in SE phones .. these are available for symbian based phones . Java programs works on both of them. If you won't a no hassle, rock stable phone go for SE models . If you want a really customizable phone with lots of modifications possible through 3rd party apps then go for symbian based phones. Virus problems and crashes due to some apps are price u pay for customization in symbian based phones :P . I will still prefer symbian anway :)

SE non-smart phones have their own share of bugs. They are much much faster to access but have quite a few bugs.... and still not corrected by firmware upgrade even after a year..

Hmm the Nokia S40 phones/SE UIQ phones are all java phones :P . To load an application in these phones, you send .jar(or .jad for index file I think)

To clarify,
UIQ is symbian.
Nokia S40,Generic SE (A100,200 etc) all run on some proprietary RTOS.
As pointed out by other ppl, java is just an application platform (than an OS).
So calling it a java phone is not techincally correct.

All mobile phones require a OS to run. Symbian is a smartmobile OS just like WindowsMobile.

Non-Smart phones also have a OS.. and java is just a OS independent platform for running the java applications and so can run on all phones, including symbian. So there are no "Java Phones" almost all phones support java.

Only two types
1.Smarphones (running Symbian/WinMobile/UIQ)
2.Non-SmartPhones (running some proprieatary RTOS)

FYI,

There was Java OS from sun few years back:ohyeah:

I was talking from a mobile phone prespective... and which mobile phone used this as OS??

PS: That wiki link states that this has been discontinued.. and sun recommends migration to Java ME (Mobile Edition) which runs on top of an OS.

So there are no "JavaOS" running on any mobile phone in the world. :)
