Kapil Sibal , Comunications and IT minister of India is looking to ban Android apps with adult content which are available on the platform. He said these applications are freely available on Android phones and are unsuitable for viewing by children.

"I want you people to suggest how can we close it. If we want to close it, you will attack us. I want all the media to come together and tell the minister how to deal with it so that if I do something about it, you don't attack me," Said Kapil Sibal regarding the adult apps on Android platform.

The Google Play store already has strict policies against such content, the Content policies page of Play store says -
We don't allow content that contains nudity, graphic sex acts, or sexually explicit material. Google has a zero-tolerance policy against child pornography. If we become aware of content with child pornography, we will report it to the appropriate authorities and delete the Google Accounts of those involved with the distribution.

But it seems that the government wants even more stringent content filtering on Android where children may still find few unsuitable apps with adult content.
Difficult To Ban International Adult Sites

Recently Indian government went after websites hosting pornographic content and decided to put a ban on them. Department of Telecom had ordered ISPs to block 39 websites.

But the attempts to ban the websites have not been successful yet and the central government has told the Supreme Court that it is difficult to put a ban on international porn sites in India. In response, the Supreme court has adviced the government to find alternative solutions.

Exactly why i gifted my nephew with an ipad mini instead of an android tablet. The parental controls on ios devices are spectecular to be honest and i hope android catches up in that department.

Tell me about it man. Few weeks back i was at my cousin's home and his son was playing Subway Surf on my iPhone. Now the kid he is, he went to the In App Purchase section and clicked a 4.99$ item to purchase. Obviously mistakenly, he is just 3.5 years old.
But thanks to what i had done already, he could not make the purchase. I had applied the restriction and turned off IAP.
Android and other platforms might be having such feature no doubt but since my phone has it, i was safe.

This should have been done earlier. ...
Every kid now uses android and whatspp and what not these days. ...
I was browsing through aps and it feels awkward ;) when ur looking for an ap and come across these things

Never been too happy about content shaping by over arching organizations. The net really should not work like this. It looses it brevity for free-speech and linked structure. I am not a porn-hound, but this can lead to other repercussions. Soon: weapons/anti-social messaging/info. against ruling 'party'/liberty of critique can/will/could follow.

Then very soon they will try to ban freedom of speech. Any common person posting comments on any party or minister will be arrested.
No more posting on fb or other sites.

^ I beg to differ. If we didn't have any freedom of speech, you can't hold any rally like the Adam admi party did which attracted thousands of people. There are more incidents where people have come out in open criticizing the govt. News channels do that openly. Talk show hosts debate frequently with ministers. If you didn't have freedom of speech, probably internet would be banned like Iran or Pakistan bans for some silly reason or other.

they have people like manu singhvi, ND tiwari etc to create content , hence they do not want people easy access to these stuff o_O

Comparing us to a pseudo-militant state Pakistan, and a theocracy, Iran; hardly makes sense. People are allowed to rally and raise their voice, but at the same time: we have cartoonists (Mumbai) getting arresting, FB girls being harassed (and taken to cop-land); and Mamta Banerjee disallowing some newspapers in her offices. That is plain weird. Kapil Sibal (a moron) going on record that India will set up infrastructure to monitor Tweets / FB feeds. Curbing of the Third Estate, is never a good idea, and shows a country is ring-fenced and runs wearing blinders. Not that I feel choked here in India, but reading about blanket covers for URL being blocked at the root level, Reliance companies banning media share links (on the pretext of release of Singham); gives me a feeling of "who is in control". They can isolate us, when they feel like. What we did to Salman Rushdie, will also haunt us forever.

Good thing you bought this up. I think Congress has gone a step further and passed some bill in June this year for national security or something. They plan to set up data centers and employ IT specialists to snoop on information to catch terrorists, etc. Seems even they want to give free cloud service like nsa in USA to Indian mobile and internet subscribers.
I saw this information on ddnews. Thought someone on TE will bring it up. Nobody bought it up, so probably it was not mentioned in the newspapers I guess.
