Storage Solutions Kaput Power Adapter

Hi Guys,

I bought a WD My Book Essential 1TB yesterday and it was DOA, atleast I thought it was until I connected it with the power adapter of my previous My Book 1TB, the drive then started working fine.

So this means, the power adapter of my new My Book is faulty. Now how do I go about it? What is the procedure of claiming warranty? I mean, the drive is ok, its just the power adapter which isn't working, will they send someone with a new one if I ask them to? Or will I have to send the faulty adapter first and wait for the new one to arrive? Apparently their customer service is only available on weekdays and today being a holiday, I'll have to wait till monday to contact them.

I have read some horror stories about their pathetic customer care service in that sticky thread, I really don't wanna go through all that hassle just for a power adapter. Is there any chance I can get a new one in the market which isn't too expensive?

^But why would I want the entire package replaced? The problem is just in their power supply and I would be more than happy if they just change the power supply. The thing is, I don't wanna wait for months like some of the TE members did just to get their product RMA'ed. That is why I asked if there was an alternate and If I could just buy the power supply if it isn't too costly ( Rs. 100-300 ).

Thanks for the link. :)

Well, last time one key on my Logitech Wireless Combo got stuck & I went for RMA, they asked me to surrender the entire package (KB + Mouse + Dongle) & gave me a box packed new combo.

I guess it works that way. As for only the power solution, I don't think that a genuine WD power Adapter would be available for purchase. Even if u do find one, it would be expensive. And if u order from ebay.com, it would be expensive + take as many days to reach you as the RMA may take..... :P

And if u are thinking of getting a local power adapter & trying ur luck, do remember that if a local adapter fries ur drive, u won't get warranty cover.

So, the better option IMHO is to get the Drive/Adapter (as the case may be) RMAed.

Well, They have this option under their Warranty/Replacement Guide : "If your drive is not defective, but you have a defective accessory, please click here to request for an accessory replacement." So I guess, just a change of the power adapter is possible afterall. Their office opens on Monday, will have to wait it out till then. I am not too keen on replacing the entire package because now atleast I am able to run the new drive with my old power adapter.

if you have a problem with power adapter only & if you are using a desktop computer

then I would suggest to use the power supply from your pc's PSU ( yellow & black )

Yeah but that is more of a temporary solution..... This being a portable drive, he cannot be expected to keep it fixed to his PSU all the time.

^^Thanks for the suggestion but I usually use my hdd with my lappy. And I already have the power adapter of my other My Book which I am currently using to power my new drive. So as far as temporary solution is concerned, I am ok. :)

There is no way out. I hav had this experience. And after 15days,,when finally I got some internal contact number, and after calling that, I got a replacement, which was faulty right from the unpacking, they sent another, again not working, then sent another, finally that worked. WD seems to be having a lot of probs with their controllers (power adaptors).
I have realised, that only way to work around that, take those cheapshit external casings for 200/400 rs. And the adaptor for the same costs 200rs..avaliable anywhere at lami.
