Kazakhstan is the worst place in the world for the Internet :(

Kazakhstan might claim that it is not the backward country portrayed in Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan. But its Interweb policy seems to gainsay this.

You get an unlimited dial-up plan for €82 in a country where the official average monthly wage is €292. An unlimited DSL connection will cost you €2,458 for an unlimited 1.5Mbps connection. They do not even chuck in a modem.:(

Bloggers who publish items critical of the government have been charged under statutes that prohibit any violations of the president's "honour and dignity." :S

Read on here: Kazakhstan is the worst place in the world for the Internet

It’s hard to believe that this isn’t a Borat sketch. We are definitely at a better position.:)

In 2003, a journalist complained that one of his favourite websites was being blocked and a local prosecutor opened a criminal case against him for compromising the security system of Kazakhtelecom. He was beaten, sentenced and "sent behind bars".

what a place....

Yeah. Now that's nice. Why don't we just compare ourselves with Bhutan then ?

Better position my arse. We're a semi-developed nation. We should compare ourselves with the European nations. Not Kazakhastan and Rwanda.

What good is India ? My native, its a remote village .. I dont have any option for board band .. even I if I want to pay 5k per month. dial up connects to nearest town 200km. so imagine how stable the connection will be.

We have lot to do for ourself before we stare at anybody !

Look forward if you want to grow ! :)

Not according to USaid, since we don't qualify for much of it anymore.

3rd world became an oxymoron the moment the iron curtain fell ;)

wtf has US aid got to do with it ? The fact that we are receiving aid in the first case means we are a third world nation. Oh..I suppose it's just a lame US antic to cut our aid off patting our backs for no reason at all.

We have a GDP per capita of $350 something in terms of real GDP (not PPP), which is even worse than countries like Mongolia or most nations in Africa.

It's just one sector in the country that's booming and that's IT, and it's more or less because of the US that survive in that sector as well.

We still have a pathetic colonial attitude of considering english speaking people as superior or considering english superior in the first case and just try to imitate west, no reason why we end up as the 2nd best, or actually even far worse than 2nd best.

So you are saying we are *still* a 3rd world country (developing is the more apt term but whatever) instead of a transforming economy in spite of :

- close to dbl digit growth for the last 5 -10 yrs, and consequent reserves in the 100s of $billions.
- Robust growth in the real estate markets in most major cities in India in the last 10 yrs and all the knock down effects it creates.
- sucessively obtaining contracts to lauch satellites for foreign partners.

If the above coninued for say a decade more, and i cant see any reason for it not to, that we might be the ones offering aid in the not so distant future.

Dunno, if you asked me, that does not sound like the stagnant 3rd world India of yore :)

There seems to be some *change* going on isn't there ?

Comparing the GDP of Mongolia with a population of 2.5 million(!) to a 1 Billion plus country does not seem very pertinent to me.

Heh, if only this was true. Try getting workers that can actually speak english in the trades. It won't happen unless the govt. realises the value of teaching in an english medium, even in 2007(!) they still have not got this point yet. Ppl in the southern states got this point much earlier and consequently have seen more economic growth than the north. If that isn't proof of the fact that a good knowledge of English is vital in today's global economy then i dont know what is. That too with these states having thier own script and are hardly as homgeneous as the north is.

Nobody is saying you should forget your culture, most ppl in this country *will* speak their native tongue(s) at home regardless of what happens.

first change our international trade rules .. its so daam old and full of scams .. i cant even import stuffs for cheap:huh:

Look at china .. they are doing so well.

What ever growth we are seeing .. i think its 80% due to IT .. real estate .. who buys a good house .. IT .. or else where is the boom ?

show me how many non-IT people spends 5k in a week end ? other than IT ..nothing is bringing money into india .. even if it is .. so minimum that can ignore.

I thot the topic was on internet facilities in Kazhakhastan.. How on earth did it become a topic on Indian trade rules and growth?????? :S

Never mind.. Seeking an explanation on this is not worth pursuing...:P
