F1 Central said:Denials and dismissals aside, speculation linking Michael Schumacher with a switch to McLaren is continuing to bubble in the German tabloid press.
'Bild' - the newspaper that lifted the lid on the Ferrari driver's meetings with Mercedes' Norbert Haug - now says 36-year-old Schumacher has a 'standing' offer on the table to stay at Maranello based Ferrari beyond 2007 on the same terms as his current deal.
''But we will not sign it for the moment,'' manager Willi Weber said. ''We're in no hurry.''
Certainly, the German duo are in no hurry given the newspaper's next revelation -- that Weber is seeking a $6.1 million per-year pay rise for Schumacher, taking his annual Ferrari salary (minus endorsements) to a huge $48.8m.
The McLaren 'negotiations', then, might merely be a Weber-ploy to convince Ferrari that another team is indeed willing to stump up with that sort of whopping cash.
Certainly, former driver and ex-BMW director Gerhard Berger doubts that Schumacher is actually considering a switch.
The Austrian said driving for a rival carmaker would be a 'contradiction' for Michael after so many years with Ferrari.
Moreover, Berger continues, Mercedes-Benz would probably even be loathe to see the red helmet bobbling about in a silver car. ''He is too associated (with Ferrari), from an image perspective,'' Gerhard - who drove for both Ferrari and McLaren - remarked.
