Linux kubuntu-desktop installation akin to fresh install?

I just installed Ubuntu 10.04, back to Linux after 6 long years :D So, I don't remember a lot of things and of course things have changed drastically.

Anyway, I was trying to install KDE on this, since GNOME is the default. I tried

Code:
apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

and was told it requires 686 MB of space. Isn't that almost a fresh install? Why would just the desktop take so much? Or am I missing something?

Why would just the desktop take so much?

KDE is not a desktop shell, its a complete environment with plethora of applications and settings. the complete installation would exceed 1gb IINM since the software base is so high I believe 600Mb is justified.

Hmm... I guess I have been living in an era gone by when KDE wasn't so large in size :P

kubuntu-desktop is a meta-package. It installs the following packages along with their dependencies

Ubuntu -- Details of package kubuntu-desktop in lucid

PS: revisiting linux after 6years, interesting...would love you hear your experience. Share it, if you wish

Yep, I saw those dependencies - a whole bunch of them. Still went ahead and installed.

About the revisiting part, well, things have changed - a LOT. I am particularly talking about the desktop environment which wasn't anywhere close to what I see now on ubuntu. Even basic configurations used to be a major pain in the @## in those days. But then that gave greater satisfaction when successful. I remember struggling to configure an EPSON printer on RH 7 since the damn model wasn't mentioned. Lots of trial and error, Googling and some luck :P Even worse was when a monitor wouldn't get detected during installation - and so you know, install without any display on the screen :D Now it's smooth. I still need to explore a lot. Just installed KDE, looks great, haven't tested much yet.

yup, installing kubuntu can potentially wreck your ubuntu install permanently. Not recommended for newbies

Well, I am not really a newbie, just out of touch. Back in the good old days I did get my hands dirty, now it's only the mind which is dirty ;)

Yup that's what's the size of the default KDE, wait till you install the debug packages....that'll take even more lol

imo kde is a bit bloated (no flames please), I'm a user of KDE myself and I don't mind saying it's bloated....but it's improving :)

I recommend you should try installing the KDE packages from the backports ppa. It has new release of KDE (4.4.3) while the repositories have 4.4.2 I think. But it would require you to download the same amount of packages hehe, so be careful :)
