PC Peripherals Lan not working : New Rig : Phenom II 945/MSI 880GMA / Corsair Ram / Win 7 x86

mk76

Guide
My brother-in-law upgraded his config as follows

Proccy - AMD Phenom II X4 945
Mobo - MSI 880GMA-E45
RAM - DDR3 Corsair 2GB x 1
HDD - WD 500GB Green
PSU - Corsair Vx 450
Cabi - CM Elite 430
Sony DVD writer

He installed Win7 x86 Ulitmate. Everything went fine except LAN not working.

The LAN indicator on mobo is active when the Rig is started. However as soon as Windows boots the light turns off. The issue remains even after doing the following
* He has updated the driver
* Changed RAM position

Any ideas what could be the issue

I suppose LAN drivers are installed by default with Win 7. Could it be a problem with the LAN cable or the router? What exactly is the issue here - unable to connect to the router/not able to access the internet or something similar?

So you mean to say the LAN indicator (the two lights near the LAN port) are ON when you start your computer and after the boot beep comes they switch off and then Windows fails to detect any LAN wire connected to it?

^ Yes. The LAN indicator is ON when the system is turned on. However, as window starts to load, the indicator switch off.

^^ He has another system (E5300/ MSI G31). Prior to getting the new one, the lan cable/router were working fine with that system. Even when the issue was encountered, he attached the old system to net and downloaded latest drivers.

Coming back to the issue, the LAN icon in systray shows disconnected, with neither LAN indicators on mobo nor on router are turned on. This happens once windows start loading.

Try attaching the HDD of the other PC (with which the LAN works) to this new upgraded PC and see if the problem still persists. (And see to it that you boot with this HDD, the one on the other system)

So the same LAN cable gets detected on your friend's other PC but not this one. Could you verify if your friend downloaded the driver from Realtek's site?

Here's the link - Realtek

Could you do some other diagnosis with swapping a stick of RAM with another, a different hard drive etc? Just to be sure if any other component is not acting up. If he did all those and the network is still not getting detected, get the board RMA'd. Probably the controller has issues.

Check in Windows 7 device manager for the installed Network adapter, post name here. Go to Network and sharing center then adapter setting, manually assign IP x.x.x.x, Test ping x.x.x.x See if you able to ping the assigned IP. Post results of ipconfig /all .

Ok.. Yesterday night he installed windows XP.

1) Upon boot after installation XP didn't detect the LAN card. LAN connectivity indicator light was on.

2) He installed the driver from Mobo driver CD.

3) The moment driver was installed, the indicator light turned off.

4) XP shows media disconnected

So does Win7.

1) Does this mean board controller has an issue and the board need to be changed?

2) If yes, can this be directly changed from the vendor(Computer Empire) and not via RMA?

If the board is fairly new, the dealer might accept it for an instant replacement else you will have to approach the authorised service center for RMA.

First of all thank you all for your inputs and suggestions. The board was the cause and was replaced by MSI.

I am impressed by their service and would like to share with the wider audience -

Yesterday morning 8 am he dropped a mail to the MSI support and couple other mail ids mentioned on the website. He mentioned that the board seems to have the issue, out of box. Within 2 hours he got the call from the service center (not the collection center in NP). The guy on phone offered him to bring his board + proc + RAM right away and that he will do the needful. With the stuff, my bro-in-law landed at the center. They checked the board with multiple OS (even a fresh install) and agreed that the board controller was having an issue.

Replaced with a new board immediately.

Things working fine now :)

Heads up guys. It seems there is one batch of the 880 boards that is having issues.

The new board that we got faced similar issue after 10 days. It happened when we installed optional update in Win 7. The optional updates had ATI4230, Realtek NIC drivers. The moment windows updated those and system was restarted - No LAN. It was back to square one. On top of that, even reformatting didn't help.

MSI's guys were helpful. They gave us a new mobo from a different batch immediately. Working fine till now.

Just a word of caution for those using this board + proccy combo

msi service seems to be pretty good indeed. :D

O RLY??

Its opposite in Mumbai btw. An acquaintance bought msi x58-e despite my skepticism (then again nothing from asus and x58-ud3r was sold out/not there) and ended up replacing 3 mobos in a row. Their socket didn't secure the processor properly and there was enough space to put a piece of cardboard between the processor and that heatsink.

Blame it on the board not the service. :|

I blame the service!! 3 different boards with different serial numbers and SAAAME issue. They said they installed a processor themselves and said its booting up so we should panic just the processor moves even after securing it with a lever. When we were there and ran a temp software they were like "Forget the screen, touch the heatsink its barely hot!" :-/

Taken the board back and he given it to the dealer. He could wait for the UD3R so he decided to pay a bit extra but then comes X58A-ud3r and he lived happily ever after!!
