Guide
hullo everyone..

my frnd who is in de states needs some help..

he wants to buy a laptop.. budget between 1-1.2kUSD...

his only requirements are that it should have 2 gigs of RAM.. and a 160Gig hdd..

any help is much appreciated...

ps:superczar!! help me out man... :)

size of screen.. the more the merrier.. shouldn be tooo heavy also.. guess a 15 in ws would be nice..

edit:nd oh yeah... he is a bit of a gamer.. so a decent gfx chip would be a plus

He can configure the Dell Inspiron 1520/1521 or Vostro 1500 from the Dell USA website.. Or you can go to Costco. and configure the dv6500/6500 Special Edition to your liking, take a printout, show it to the nearest Costco store and they'l get you one. Only thing is in the HP, the graphic card, they dont go above the 8400m GS.

Also, look here :

Dell Coupons, Free Online Coupon Codes, Dell Computer Deals and More Discounts at CouponMountain.com

You can get 20% off on HP laptops and $325 on Dell Inspiron laptops :)

+ 1 for dell vostro, its the best in my frank opinion!! and hey tell him to save 400$ from his 1.2k an add in a lil of his own an get an iphone along wit it.. hehe tas ta cherry on ta top!! ;)

h edoesn't need to spen d1-1.2K for this requirement...

ask him to get a Compaq F572US for like 500-600 (comes with 1 Gig )

then get a 1 GB stick of ram from newegg or zipzoomfly and he'll be all set for a fraction of his original budget

@superczar, doesnt the compaq come with like 80gb hdd, while he specifically wants 160gb. And also i personally feel intel is the way to go these days, or even if he wants to go for amd, inspiron 1000 is a way better solution than compaq man.. wat say u??
Footnote: the hp has 2X512mb ram, so i dont think there would be any scope of expanding the ram. And also he screws the warranty if he upgrades the ram. Plus im not to knowledgeable about graphics cards but as a complete package isnt this a better option: Dell Vostro 1500
Intel Core 2 Duo T5470 (1.6GHz, 2MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB), Vista Basic, 15.4″ Wide Screen XGA LCD Display with TrueLife, 1GB SDRAM, 120G 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive, 8X CD/DVD Burner w/ double-layer DVD+R write capability, 128MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS, 802.11g Wi-Fi Mini Card, 56 WHr 6-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery, Integrated 2.0 mega pixel Web Camera, 1 Year Limited Hardware Warranty with Mail-in Service.
All for 599 green dollars..!!
Do let me know wat u think, and i hope this config is useful to stalker aswel.
Cheers Mate!! :hap2:

@ superczar: hey iv heard that the screen bleeding is a prob in a few of the laptops, but when i read the forums regarding the 1500 i also found out that the majority of them did not really mind the bleeding as it was mostly to miniscule to handle, but a few complained bout its plain boxy looks, which could be subjective.

But frankly i feel the vostro's a much better deal than the compaq, and if u really dont like the dell iv heard they have a 30 day return policy wherby u can return the laptop wit logical reasons. So y not give it a shot an try ur luck.

the vostro has a fu$%ked up screen with major backlight bleeding

Shucks is it that bad? And does the issue exist with all screen options? Just recommended either the Inspiron 1420 or Vostro 1400 to a friend :ashamed:

He has a similar 1~1.2k budget but with slightly different options. A 14 incher preferred. A decent C2D, 2gigs of RAM, decent enough hard disk space and a decent dedicated graphics card. He was initially considering a Macbook for around 1.3k$ configured. :bleh:

Any suggestions?

P.s: Sorry stalker for the thread jack :ashamed:

Depends on how finicky you are

i don't care too much about the configuration as long as it can run XPsnappily (read 1 GB RAM and a proccy as low as a turion 1.5Ghz or a Intel T2080)

What I am finicky about is the screen and the build quality

In the last 1 month I have seen 10 new Dells being delivered to different friends in a row (6 Vostro 1500, 3 Inspirons and a XPS1330)

Except the XPS, all machines had backlight bleeding issues and a low contrast and low backlight screen...

Compared to other low budget machines (like HP dv2000/6000), the screen quality left a lot to be desired

Having said that, the build quality is pretty good on the new Inspirons and Vostros (Mg- Alloy body) and if you aren't too picky abt the screen , it's a good buy....

Having said

@ Superczar, which laptop would you recommend for around $500 to buy from US.

@ Stalker, sorry for thread jacking. dont wanted to create a separate thread for a same kind of query

@ Superczar, which laptop would you recommend for around $500 to buy from US.

Compaq C572US (Turion X2)

Acer 5570 (Core Duo)

However, It's difficult to get them straight for $500...you would need to find a deal to come round the corner....

And when such cheapa$$ deals come out, people slurp them up in a few hours (American are a whole lot more value conscious than us ;) )

well...

this is wat he picked up eventually.. comments welcome :)

nd does the screen bleeding come up over a period of time.. or is out of the box???

Backlight bleeding is always out of the box.. dont think time has any effect on it. Nice config though, let us know how bad the backlight bleeding is :)

the best way to test backlight bleed is to open a pure black image (create one in paint) running full screen size with the backlight set to max.....
