Laptops Laptop choices - Help!

Hi,
I'm buying a new laptop. My dream laptop is a fully loaded ASUS, but that's a bit out of my budget right now. I have a couple of options and need some experienced insight on what might be the best choice. Please help me decide what system is the best... Dell Inspiron 6400 Intel Core 2 Duo T7200, 2Ghz. 1 GB RAM, 80 GB HD (7200), 256 GeForce 7300 graphics, Windows Business Vista & Office Basic 2007, with 15.4" ultra sharp screen...for less than half the price on Dell's site, and still has 4 months of warranty. Or an Hp Pavillion 6000 64X2 AMD 1GB, 100 GB HD (5400) 128 integrated graphics- NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150 with Windows XP Media Center, 15.4" WXGA with High-Definition BrightView. This is only 3 months old and I can also get this for half original price. These are being sold because they are not as portable as owners had hoped they would be. So, is Dell the better choice or HP? Also, does anyone have trouble carrying a 15.4" laptop back & forth each day? Should I go with a 14" screen, bypassing both of the aforementioned "steals"?

Help? In the past I've had smaller laptops, but now only have a superb desktop, but need portability for returning to grad school. Thanks. :)
Sorry for the lengthy thread...

I think it's pretty clear.

Go with the Dell. Better Processing, Better Graphics, Lesser Heat, Longer running per battery charge.

This is what you'll get from everybody here. Sure it isn't a looker, but if you don't care... then don't even hesitate.

Thanks for your reply. I realize given the specs of the HP, the Dell seems like the best choice. Okay, so here's my next question and the most important...is the 15.4" practical to take back & forth every day? I think that's my main question.

Depends on how much you travel and in which city.

I tried carrying company given Lenovo (15.5'' model) from my home to approx 45 min travel to office and then to other locations and outstation trips and it was simply inconvenient.

Thats the reason i went in for XPS in the end and now i am with 2 of them.

IMHO anything over 2 KG and it starts to become little inconvenient.

But if price is an issue then the deal which you are getting on DELL is simply too good to resist.

If portability is concern then ultraportable is the only way to go.

if portability is what u want then go for Dell XPS m1210... as 15.4" seems to much to lug around...combined with the case weight it is equal to carrying 3.5kgs around

^^LOL

14" ers are also fairly portable...

somehow, the 15.4" s get a little too bulky for the extra 1.3"

But check this for the difference between the 2nd and 3rd machine (14.1" vs 13.3")

0.8 might not sound like much, but trust me, it does make a difference :P

On a side note, shipped the RAM as yet?

^^ didn't get you there...Far better than what?

On a side note, A person who need s a machine for web browsing/office apps/basic image editing/music won't notice any difference between a T7200 and a Turion X2

would he?

Well, its all boils down to personal choices.

You may wanna check out some 14" and 15.4" models firsthand before making this decision as sometimes ppl may sacrifice a little portability for a better screen or vice versa..

A 15.4" screen is much larger then the 14" screen and personally though i find the 14" much smaller and lightweight I would go ahead with the 15.4" anyday as the screen is more larger with much larger desktop space and viewing area. Weight & size? I rather think it of as more free exercise!:P

So if i were you, i would check out 14" & 15.4" model laptops firsthand and check their size & weight before going along with the decision.

Btw, that Dell 6400 & the dv6000t for half the price sounds like a great deal. ;)
