I got these prices from Glasgow Computers, Brigade Road, Bangalore.

256 MB 333Mhz DDR RAM - Rs 700/-
512 MB 333Mhz DDR RAM - Rs 1200/-
1 GB 333Mhz DDR RAM - Rs 3100/-

I also got these quotes from Computer Shop(just above Glasgow).

256 MB 333Mhz DDR RAM - Not available.
512 MB 333Mhz DDR RAM - Rs 1350/-
1 GB 333Mhz DDR RAM - Rs 2600/-

Some questions:

1) Are these prices ok for DDR laptop RAM? What are prices like on SP Road?

2) Is there DDR-400 for laptop RAM?

3) I already have 256MB 333Mhz RAM in my intel celeron based compaq laptop. What capacity module/combination of modules should I go for? Is there some dual channel benefit in a Celeron M-370.

4) Any specific brand to look out for?

Appreciate your help guys. I just wanna make XP faster on my laptop. I feel the 256MB existing RAM is really stifling the system. Would 2GB RAM really help on a laptop or is 1GB or 512MB enough?

1. Yep prices look good. AFAIK DDR2 itself was selling for 2.5k per gig.

2. Yep there is! Was wondering why you mentioned DDR333 prices alone :S

3. The Celeron-M was a sort of early version of our present Core 2 Duo, so its not exactly mem bandwidth hungry. Anyway depends on whether your board/chipset supports dual-channel. I guess a single 1GB stick should do, considering there are at most only 2 RAM slots.. in case you need to go to 2GB later on.

4. Transcend should do.

2GB of RAM for a basic laptop wouldn't be useful unless you're into heavy gaming, mem-hungry apps, or Vista. 1GB should do good. Also i've often noticed on laptops, the I/O system i.e. the hard disk speeds are quite a bottleneck even after souping up your RAM.

Just wanted to add that if you are going for a new laptop, insist on a 7200 rpm hard drive.

Crazy_Eddy pretty much summed up all the points.

Eddy, thanks a bunch for the response. I saw only DDR 333 RAM in Glasgow Computers. Was wondering why he had no DDR 400 :S .

I don't know if DDR400 would make any difference on my system. Here are some details I copied from CPU-Z.

Processor: Intel celeron M 370. Dothan core. 1.5Ghz socket 479 mPGA 90nm
Cache: (32+32)K L1 1024K L2
Memory: Channel:single FSB : DRAM 3:5
SPD: Max b/w: PC 2700 (166Mhz)
Chipset: i915gms/i910gml Southbridge: intel 82801FBM(iCH6-M) rev 03.
Mobo: Quanta 308F BIOS Rev: F.21

Ya, transcend was the only brand that I saw available. Don't think it matters anyway.

Even I feel that the HDD of this compaq laptop is sloppy. I'm thinking of installing a new 120/160GB drive. Maybe that will speed things up. I had replaced 1GB with 2GB in my desktop and did not see much difference except in memory intensive games like FEAR. I'm also now thinking 2GB would make any difference vs 1GB in a laptop. Just have to decide between 512MB and 1GB.

Falconeye, do you know if 7200 rpm laptop drives are available in Bangalore/India?

Just a correction there.. Transcend 1GB DDR2 667Mhz Laptop RAM is available for around 1.5K max these days..You can get it even cheaper from the right vendors ;)

As for the original poster, the DDR1 RAM prices look okay.

Cheers!

Yepp..got 1 GB Transcend DDR333 Notebook RAM for Rs 2,600/- + 4% tax i.e. Rs 2704/- from Computer Shop(had to wait 1 hr until the damn piece arrived :@ ). It's installed and working fine.

Better than going all the way to SP Road for me :hap2: .

OT: It's easy to replace the memory on compaq lappys as they have the memory slots located below a removable panel at the lappy bottom. Not the case for my Lenovo T60. I just can't find the panel. Anyone upgrade memory on their Dell laptops? Just curious about the ease of upgrading memory
