Did not where to put this question other than the laptop section.. I have a HP DV6516 laptop bought over a year ago.. I have dual booted it with XP SP3 and Vista Home Premium.. For the past few weeks I have been noticing that the DVD writer is unable to burn CDs. Initially I thought this was just a media issue, but after trying in branded CDs (Sony, Moser Baer) I found that it is not just a problem with the CD used. :(

I have tried burning in XP and Vista, using imgburn, cdburnerxp pro, Roxio Creator Basic and also Alcohol 120%. All these softies identify the disc, and start the burning process normally, and proceed the same way upto 8 mins or so, when they show that the burning process has completed 100% and the CD ejects. But when I insert the burnt CD again in the drive, it is identified as empty.. Even to the naked eye, I am not able to see the difference in reflection that the portion of CD containing the data usually has.. DVDs are burnt perfectly alright..!! :p

So, it is almost sure to be a hardware problem, right..?? What can be done to resolve this..? Can the drive alone be removed and repaired or replaced..? Please let me know.. And TIA..! :hap2:

I am having Lenovo Y500 laptop one year old and also having the same problem sometimes it burns and some time fails and when i saw the burned disks on another drive they were burned perfectly.my Laptop has Matshita 85jS writer.

The problem here is that the "burnt" discs are not really written.. They are empty even when seen in other computers..!

^^ No warranty..! What exactly has to be fixed.. the lens only or the entire drive..?? Any idea regarding the cost for the same..? If its gonna be too costly, I'll just restrict myself to burning DVDs for now.. :P

1. U ll find out once u give it to them, right?

Else get an external casing+writer, will prob be cheaper if u have to replace ;)

Check with service guys first.
