Well , my Mom is gettin a laptop from her office, and the budget quoted is around 70k , now i am looking at the XPS , and the VAIO FZ series lappys, both of which i think will fit in the budget , now the major requirement is portability , so the 13.3" screen on the XPS seems nice , while the VAIO has the sony sleekness, so what do u suggest ? I'll be adding at least 2GB DDR2 on it , and a dedcated GPU like the nvidia 8600 wud be better, or even the 8400 wud be ok .

So ne suggestions ?
 
Well, the stock configuration is pretty good as it is.

But since you have an extra 25 odd grand, get a 9cell battery, 250gigger HDD, high res screen, and most importantly, extended warranty.
 
Dell quality is bad bad bad. And the extended warranties are useless - my friend got one, but the one component that went bust after a year (and I mean completely gone, if the power cord fell out, the laptop just switched off immediately), the battery, is not covered. When she called the call centre, they showed her the fine print, and she said she'd rather buy a non-dell laptop than buy a battery from them. Then the call centre dude said that was a bad idea and this was the "first time he had heard of someone's battery getting spoiled after a year". This clearly was the dude's first day. EVERYONE who buys Dell suffers this way. After 1 year, the battery is next to useless.

Don't make the same mistake.... buy some other brand. Look at Thinkpads (ugly as hell but reliable and functional) or Toshiba.
 
^I've had a similar experience with an HP notebook, and my friend's Toshiba notebook has MAJOR overheating issues.

Dell India support is far better than Dell US

and as for the battery, every manufacturer has a 6 month warranty on the battery

Li-Ion batteries will last a max of 2 years under light usage and 1.5 yrs for most..it's a technolgy limitation of Li-Ions

A 1 year death for the battery was a little premature but it's more a one off case than anything else...

On a side note, My dell's battery is now dead after 1.5 yrs...My Compaq's battery died out after 2 (though the Dell has been used much more heavily) while Dad's Fujitsu battery is over 40% worn after 2 yrs (very very light usage)

(60%+ wear means replacement time)
 
Hmm.....will luk into the Macs , but as such , ill be usin it more than her :bleh: , i liked the dell , i configured one on their site with the slim LCD , nd 250gb , nd 8400 Mobile , along with some oher components, now awaiting a gud quote from their reps bfor i finalize it......mom has to forward the quote to her office , which will then get the lappy for her
 
ok , now budget increased , to 1.20 lacs....:D , now i have reconfigured the dell xps 1330 , to have 4gb ram , vista ultimate , and the 13.3 slim nd light screen , along with the nVidia 8400 GPU , plus a Logitech G5 mouse for me :bleh: ..... now the problem is since it is a office purchase, there might be trouble , so is there any other brand which offers a similar config , at the nearly same price ??
 
Why exactly would there be an issue? So long as it's a part of the laptop configuration as per the bill, don't think there should be any problem..

Dude 4GB ram is like blowing up money.
2gb is good enuf even for power users.
also get a m1530 as u ll get a 8600m gt with it.
Also if u can wait, then wait for Dell to include t8***/9*** 45nms in their customisation options.. also wait for them to include the 8800m gt/gtses.
 
yaar.....waiting for the 8800s wud be like at least another 1-2months, too long a time...
i know the 4gb is an excess, but i wanna get watever i can :) , gettin even the G5 for my future rig :bleh:
as for the m1530, only the 8600 is there, but its heavier, which i dont want.....the 1330 seems like the better option

My HP NX9010 is still up, i've been using it for more then 3 years(was heavily used for 2yrs but most of the time on surge). though the battery standby time is decreased but not dead !

Only the mobo got fused recently causing a dent of 6k in my pocket :S

any proggies to check battery life ?
 
Good proccy and GPU is a must. T7500, 2 GB, 8400GS, White LED LCD, 160 GB 7200 rpm (don't even look at a 5400 rpm option), and the 9 cell battery. Other stuff you can look at what you want...
 
have done that.....everything is set in dell , with a T7500 , 4GB DDR2( an overkill i kno , but still :bleh: ) , 250GB 7200RPM , and a slim crimson red screen , with a 8400GS , and the G5 mouse :D, will be knowing whether dell do or not, otherwise a similar config in VAIO , maybe lesser RAM , and a seperate G5 hehe

Hope i havnt left anything out.......now are there any changes i shud make before finalizing this ? For eg. the 6cell nd 9cell batteries ? I chose the 6cell coz i heard the 9cells stick out of the bottom.....
