1) What is your budget?

20k.. can go upto 22k if necessary

2) What size notebook would you prefer?

13" - 14" screen(willing to consider 12")

3)What are the primary tasks will you be performing with this notebook?

word processing/office work, some movies

I would prefer if it came with Windows 7

no particular preference for any brand

i was looking at brazos(e 350/450)

my first choice was msi cr430, it seems to be out of stock everywhere.

please suggest a similar alternative.

2ndly, i'd like a warranty of more than a year, MSI gives 2 year warranty.

so what do you'll suggest?

How about HP DM1z? Had bought it last year with E350 and its a near little package.. Would be sufficient for most of your requirements, apart from the screen size...

I am using Acer 4738Z for about 10 months now. I bought it on eBay for ~20k. Pentium P6200/2GB DDR3/14"/500GB/Linux/1Yr Warranty

No issues with build quality or any other thing till now. Recently upgraded RAM to 6GB.

This config is sufficient for the work you intend to do. But not sure if this particular model is still available and if you like/hate Acer

it's actually for my dad, he wears specs.. he says he wont be comfortable with a small screen. what do you say? is 11.6" ok for word processing etc?

The screen may be okay, but a 11.6 inch laptop will have a smaller keyboard as well, and typing on that may not be too comfy.

Why do you want to go for a brazos? They cost about the same as pentium dual cores, perform worse, and don't have too much of an advantage when it comes to battery life.

I'd suggest trying Linux instead of Windows7 if you want to keep costs down. Linux has come a long way from where it was an OS primarily for computer geeks. My girlfriend's a complete noob, she didn't even know what a hdd was, but she's using Linux on her desktop, and doesn't really know how it's different from windows.

I like your idea of going for an MSI. Their 2 year warranty sounds really nice. They've got budget pentium based laptops too.

If you want a longer warranty with other brands, they cost about 5000 on average for 2 additional years. Except for Sony, who sells the extended warranty for ~2500. I think Toshiba's having a promo on extended warranty's right now, and selling them for about ~2000.

reason i'm going for brazos is because it suits my budget. can you suggest a pentium based laptop in that budget? I'm using Ubuntu for the past year. It's become easy , i know but third party support is not there... so i need W7. Linux is not an option.

Guys, 2nd Generation Pentium Dual Cores have the same HD3000 graphics right? On the laptop processors atleast.

And what's the cheapest 2nd Gen Pentium Powered/Core i3 powered laptop with a 14" screen and 4GB RAM (no OS required) and one with 15.6" screen?

I found the laptop to be sufficient for my general surfing, entertainment and for word processing.. Also makes a great travel companion.. But like your dad said it might be a tad too small for his use..
