Hello guys I'm completely new to the laptop world as I've used only using desktops till now but off late it seems that love affair has come to an abrupt end, that's for another time. Please help me decide making a brand / company preference based on your real life experiences with the brand you've been using.

Kindly list some good websites which I can keep a track of for information about laptops (learn about laptops in General) & laptop reviews. Also suggest me a laptop on the basis of the following info:

Q. What's your Budget?
around 34K

Q. What are the specs you have in mind?
- 3rd Gen IvyBridge Processors (if i5 can fit in then cool)
- 2GB RAM (with atleast one empty slot to upgrade later) / 4GB RAM
- No OS / DOS laptops are an option if it has an i5 processor.
- USB 3.0, HDMI port, SD Card reader
- 500GB HDD

Q. What will be your primary usage for the notebook be?
Office apps, Multimedia playback, Gaming once in a blue moon.

Q. What size and weight considerations do you have?
14 - 15.6 inchers (good quality display) with the least weight option available.

Q. Any brand that you prefer, or any brand that you detest?
- Complete newbie to laptops so kindly guide me here.
- Will be happy to know which company provides best after sales service & a company which has an option for accidental damage protection & actually provides it is highly preferred.

Q. Any other considerations?
- 9 cell battery option
- Matte finish on the screen as well as the body preferred
- Durablility & Reliability is one of the important criterias

Laptops considered as of now:
- ThinkPad Edge series E340
Considered for durability & battery life which I've just read about but have no concrete info, so I'm open to correction & would like hear feedback from users of ThinkPad laptops in general.

One more thing I would like to know about, is it a better option to buy a laptop overseas with international warranty as price tends to be lower ?

^I don't think you would save much in buying laptop from overseas. If you're getting some sort of discount, then it should be considered, without compromising the warranty part. Get either Thinkpad or Probook. Both are good but you won't get i5 in this budget.

When talking about overseas I was thinking about this: http://www.amazon.com/Sony-Series-SVE15115FXS-15-5-Inch-Aluminum/dp/B0080C21Y8#productPromotions which rounds at about 36k but don't know how much more for taxes I'll have to pay.

- Jugga please suggest me a laptop if I increase my budget to 36k which would be my final upper limit.
BTW in case I get a laptop without a graphic card but in future if I need can I install one ?

- @DarkAngel could you please help me?

- @kestrel5915 could you pitch in as well? I'm asking after reading this:
I think I'm going to get the Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E430 for her mainly due to durability, build quality and the keyboard.
You could look at the Edge E530 model for a 15.6" screen.
Thinkpads usually don't require ASS but even when they do it's still good in India.

I might be buying the Sony vaio E series the one you have listed above. Or mostly the SVE15114FXS. If you search for this laptop on amazon you will find the price above 700$ but I have seen least price as 579$ shipped and sold by amazon. I am waiting for that deal to come so that I can pull the trigger.

My main concern is also durability and reliability and although there's no such thing as a fail proof laptop but thinkpads have a good reputation for the same and also the keyboards are the best in class.
AFAIK IBM used to handle the ASS for thinkpads in India and as such it was much better than other lenovo models but I don't know whether they're still doing so.
But these laptops are usually bulky and heavier than most others and also price wise the configuration might be slightly old as compared with others.
So Ivy Bridge may not be possible with thinkpads in that budget.

However, you could look at Dell (Inspiron series) since their service and cover is supposed to be good and should fit in your budget.
Other brand that I'd suggest would be Toshiba as the build quality is generally good and many of my friends have been using them without worries.

Actually ASS depends a lot on the area so a same brand may have widely different quality of service in different areas.
Accidental damage protection is offered by many brands including Lenovo.

I'd suggest staying away from HP at least for now since their recent series of laptops have had overheating issues.
So if buying a HP laptop better check the reviews thoroughly.
Reviews can be found at almost any computer related sites like PCmag, PCworld, CNET, etc.
Other dedicated sites for laptops are Notebookreview, Laptopmag, etc.
User reviews in forums (like TE and others) are also very helpful.
