HP envy 13-14, Dell xps 14z, any of the ultrabooks here (http://www.amazon.co...ltr%2Caps%2C282)

I cannot find any 13" HP Envy. I can just see a 14" and 17" Envy. It looks like the Indian site is messed up. I cannot see any on Flipkart too.

The Dell XPS 14Z looks good but its for above 60K and I am worried about this one having heating issues too. I own a Dell XPS 13 already and this one heats up a lot and causes great discomfort to me while using it.

I would prefer something with onboard graphics as that shouldn't cause heating issues.

Have a look

My friend is using this with 8gb RAM, Excellent LOOK and feature

I think Letsbuy.com has wrongly listed the Dell Vostro V131 as V130. Check this,

http://www.dell.com/in/business/p/vostro-v131/pd

It definitely looks good but there is no built in Optical Drive

.The HP Probook is decent but I already have one and I found it a bit bulky.

Guys any idea about how is this?

Sony Vaio SB36 is a good option in this category with intel i5+4gb ram+500gb hdd+AMD 6470 and its meets most of your requirements like good support, lightweight and portable, aluminium-magnesium body, backlit keyboard, professional looks and a built-in optical drive, the only negative point is battery life of 3-4 hrs: http://www.flipkart.com/computers/laptops/sony/itmd29tntvpesrnm?pid=comd29sjrm4eyzqs&_l=pH_5QZ2WcoVa60_JUFCM4A--&_r=GTlACDe_7v5JfYPdEiwwkQ--&ref=c29ac1fc-3b74-4361-85f6-11716ae3f8e5

I checked the Engagdet review of the XPS 14Z and it looks good and supposedly is free of heating issues. I really like the laptop. I am in talks with Dell as of now and trying to get the best price for it. They have quoted me around 71K with 3 years Complete Cover which is way too much. Lets see. If somebody can help me get a good deal on it, please let me know. Thanks.

As of now, I am looking at the following latops:

1. Dell XPS 14Z

2. Acer Aspire S3 Ultrabook

3. Dell Vostro V131 (No OD)

4. Dell Vostro 3450

#Mohit: You can get 5% student discount on Dell laptops, so after further negotiations on phone, dont forget to ask for student discount.

Consider importing a Core i7 based Thinkpad x220 with a 9 cell battery. It will cost you 800-1000 US$. With dipping exchange rates its a more tempting proposition. I paid Rs.54,000 for my x220 with the above configuration which cost me 1000US$ from Ebay.com (USA) @ Rs.54 a US$.You can have it shipped to a friend/relative's address in the US and ask them to get it for you. You can claim and extend warranty from IBM India.

PROS:-

Its a thinkpad! Nuff said! 12.5 inch 720p IPS panel with a 9 cell battery which returns a phenomenal battery life of atleast 11 hours no matter what you do with including wifi and watching movies (x264) non stop. If you are judicious with the battery you can eke out 14 hours easily on the trot. The build quality and reliability is what Thinkpads are known for all over the world. You and throw it around and abuse it as much as you want. The keyboard is a full sized keyboard and is an absolute joy to type on. With a Sandy Bridge Core i7 2620 it can handle whatever you throw at it. Including Audio/video encoding and running VMWare, it can do whatever a desktop CPU can do as it generates over 8000 points in PCMark. Full HD playback is supported and light gaming is possible with the Intel HD 3000. It comes with a 7200rpm Hitachi drive with HD Airbag and the full shebang of Thinkvantage productivity applications. You can buy a preconfigured Thinkpad x220 with a ericsson WWAN module ie integrated broadband modem with 3g which can be used as a data card by sticking in the sim card into your laptop. A comprehensive set of security features with COMPUTRACE completes the security part. USB 3.0 and always on external device charging features are also available.

CONS-

NONE! Unless you are inspired by a half eaten rotten fruit of a company and believe everything needs to look glossy and consumerish and plasticy and tacky and gay. Probably a dvd writer/optical drive - but then I have never used my laptop or desktop's optical drive in over 2 years. You can get an external dvd writer for 2k.

You can get a core i3 based X220 for less than 700US$ and a core i5 based x220 for 750US$.

I really like the Thinkpad X220 but I will not be able to import it. I don't have anybody coming from the States actually otherwise I would have definitely looked into it. How much does it cost in India by the way?

It starts at 55k for the core i3 version with 3 years of warranty and a 6 cell battery. the core i5 costs 70 k with a 6 cell battery and 3 years of warranty. the core i7 is upwards of 90k.

I think the core i3 with 3 years warranty and 6 cell battery should be fine for me. Let me check with my dealer. I could not find it on Flipkart though. Are there any other major differences in the models apart from the processor and battery?

Yes - it depends on the type of wireless card, integrated solutions such as bluetooth, webcam(which is not standard on all models), usb charging, fingerprint reader and other security solutions like computrace and integrated broad band, etc which vary from model to model. Usually the ones sold in India are pre configured and include bluetooth 3.0 and intel agn 6203 wireless cards. Higher end core i7 models come with a 128 gb ssd.

IPS panels are standard across the range.

If you are keen on a thinkpad - http://www.flipkart.com/computers/l...2A--&ref=d380afa8-5049-4649-bfeb-68245c0ab428

You can get the core i5 version for around 40k.

I finally ordered the Dell XPS 14Z with the core i5 processor and 3 years Complete Cover warranty today. I got the deal for 65K finally after a lot of haggling. They have increased the prices of the XPS range even more it seems. I am waiting for the delivery now. It should take around 10 days as per the Sales Rep.
