Mr India

Forerunner
Currently have a 11.6 inch portable netbook and the 1ghz dual core amd is always at 70-100% on just browsing a few tabs. Also having many issues so am looking for a replacement.

Max 14 inch screen as i dont like bulky stuff
screen should be nice/HD if possible
even 320gb HDD ok , even 2 gb ram i see in task manager is never filled. just the cpu is getting maxed these days very easily even with no anti virus.
should last me 3 years.
Second hand ok too but dunno where to get these.
I only watch movies and browse the net on a laptop.
No br

Budget? Why not get an iPad (used) instead? Would be more comfortable (lie down with ipad on your tummy and use unlike a laptop! :P).

But this will only work if you can do with a smaller screen. If 14 inch is absolutely necessary, get a used Core i3/i5 (2nd, 3nd gen) based lappy. Lenovo thinkpad ones are good and easily available in the used market for less than 15K (check olx).

save up cash and pony for one with 6th gen i3. These will have x265 support. Else, Atom laptops which have N3000 series also will work - if there are any, they too have x265 support.

I have increased budget till 26 k so it lasts 4 years atleast.

ipad only has like 16gb and will still cost 20k. i have like 100gb data ofmovies etc that i need. also browsing is what i do mostly and on ipad i have to like hold it and keep touching etc for moving around pages. aa mouse is more easier and comfier. i can do withless screen as i anyway used a 11inch netbook till it died this sunday. laptop im not sure i shud get second hand as it may have issues , bad hard drive etc and my data is critical and cant risk crashes.

i thought the 4th gen i3 is enough to play x265 videos. 6th gen only needed ? i think i can get this laptop for under 25k in market but it has 5h geni5 only. i dont see any 6th gen i3 laptops with under 30k prices anywhere

The 4th gen has partial support, AFAIK. Its equivalent to draft n wifi routers, which is not the complete 802.11n specification.
how about 5th gen i3. im getting a 5th gen 2 ghz i3 lappy at 25k. X265 is the future as movie sizes become small and easier to download so need its support.

5th gen is just a die shrink of the 4th gen, without any improvements. So wont make a difference.

You should wait and watch for local availability of this one

im sre it wil launch at over 35k which is too high when it only has a 120 gb hard drive. though i can manage by adding a 64 gb card too and it is light weight as well but price would be too high. i can wait till may end to buy if i get something good in under 29k.

:banghead:

The 4th and 5th gen have partial support, not complete support. I mentioned this earlier.

Generational Implementations of HEVC
Since consumers expect you to optimize your media applications for all types of devices, it’s important to look at the capabilities of the recent generations of Intel processors.

  1. 4th Generation Intel Core processors (Haswell CPU 2- 3.5GHz, 4 Cores): Includes an HEVC Software Decoder capable of real time decode of HEVC 4K streams.
  2. 5th Generation Intel Core processors (Broadwell): Supports HEVC 8-bit software/hybrid encode.
  3. 6th Generation Intel Core processors (Skylake) Supports hardware accelerated HEVC 8-bit decode and encode.

@vivek.krishnan so the 4/5 gen dont have hardware accel for x265. but they can still play the videos right ? any laptop under 30k with screen 12-14 and hard disk 500 gb that has hardware accelerated x265 playing ability. is it that important a feature ?will youtube also become x265 dependent on future ?

how come laptops in india are so expensive. so many great ones on amazon.com under 400 $ or Rs 26400 .in under 400$ im even getting 6th gen i3 !! anyway to import one ?

That's news to you ? India has always been a second rate market in most fields, manufacturers never bring in their latest and greatest partly due to the perception of lack of demand.
We also pay a premium on most electronic parts and products because of taxes, also the dollar has been going strong for quite some time so don't even dream of getting those prices here, the only way is to ask a friend/relative to pick one up for you.

should i use those usa to india shipping services ? i read on quora it costs only 50$ for getting a laptop. using them i can get a laptop i3 6gen for only 400+50$ = 30k. i dont have any friends coming from USA to india. anyone here who can refer me to a friend to save the shipping cost ?

It's currently 15%.
Sounds like you haven't dealt with the customs guys yet, it's really not worth the hassle imo.
It might get damaged in transit, you won't have warranty and the customs guys miscalculate/overcharge occasionally.
