My Dad's PC just died so I have decided to buy him a laptop instead. He just needs to work on Office, Browse a bit and occasionally trade stocks.

So far I've had a look at the Dell Inspiron 14" T4300 for around 30K. It would suit his needs, but I was wondering if theres a better option at this price point.

Get your dad a 15 inch laptop as coming from a pc, he wouldnt feel comfortable with a small screen size. you can get better specs at that pricepoint by opting for other brands like msi, asus etc but i feel the usage conditions described by you dont need better specs and you will like to get hassle-free onsite warranty which comes with dell for your dad as it will be easier for him to get it repaired onsite than going to service centres and then collecting back, just customise any dell inspiron 15 as per your budget.

U can get a Dell 15R with P6100 for 32k and I-3 370M+HD5470 with a DOS for 33k from Dell :) Check the local markets. They will stock the non-OS version of Dell for most configs and will cost cheaper.

Why don`t you buy a vostro .Built quality is much better than inspiron, C2D procy and 2gigs of ram, onboard intel gma45 will do the job.Save the rest for a 3 year c.c.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. And yes, I've decided to stick with Dell for the on-site warranty. Am also checking out some 15" options like you guys suggested.

Had a looka the vosro 1015, looks good. Might go for this one over the inspiron.

Edit: Is it ok to order a laptop online? I've never done that. I'm guessing that shipping damage could be a problem. The thing is that I live in Mumbai but I want the laptop delivered to my dad in Chennai.

^^Dont worry about Dell shipping, they send the courier with bullet proof packaging and you wont get a damaged laptop, order the laptop yourself and give your dad's address as shipping address.

It is safe to buy from Dell online. Why 15" over 14"?If watching movies or gaming is not a priority a 14 incher is usually the better option, specially for a business laptop. If it is going to be a desktop replacement 15 'will be fine.

^^read the first post, its a desktop replacement and also 15 inchers are not that heavy that you cant carry it, moreover his dad was using a desktop till now and a 14 incher will strain his eyes, i know this from personal experience.

Exactly. He is used to a 19" monitor, dont want him to strain while using a 14" one. Thanks guys, will order from the dell store.

i picked up a lenovo G550 for 29.5k from an ezone in chennai for my sister. basic config, but works for daily usage :)

15.6" , T4500, win 7HB, 500GB HDD

What good things? They are cheap and that`s about it.Poor built quality, boring looks, bad A.S.S.So what is left really?
