Hi everyone,

I have zeroed down on the Dell Studio XPS 13 because it matches my requirements exactly. However, it has a 13.3" screen and there seem to be some heating issues with it.

My intended configuration for a laptop is:

1. CPU = Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 (or better), [1066 Mhz FSB with 6 MB L2
Cache preferable]
2. Memory = 3GB DDR3 at 1066 MHz
3. Graphics card = nVidia GeForce 9500 or higher
4. Hard disk = 250 GB, 7200 RPM
5. Screen size = 15.4" or higher
6. 8x DVD ± RW Drive
7. Internal Modem
8. Integrated 10/100/1000 Ethernet card
9. Integrated Wireless adapter

Any suggestions?

dont buy current dell xps 13 or 16 both have design flaw due to with it heats up a lot. problem is with screen when u open screen it 100 to 120 degrees it will block the laptop heat vent 90% thats why it heats up a lot. i have returned my xps 16 2 days ago and will get full refund in 10 days

Also, while Dell has acknowledged this problem, they also claim that using the custom Hybrid SLI User Interface to reduce the power consumption in the performance and power saving modes reduces the problem of heating.
 
well thats option is only in xps 13 but i order xps 16 that just is with single dedicated card but vent block issue is with both models. so its almost same that ur system is without heat vent
 
you want to run Linux? make sure your laptop comes with a intel/nvidia graphics card.don't prefer the one with a broadcom chipset for wifi.

Yeah, I am looking for 1066 MHz FSB and memory bus (DDR3) and an nVidia GeForce, so the choices get limited. I guess if I relax the DDR3 requirement, then a few more options crop up.

I used Linux (Fedora Core 10) exclusively on my HP Pavilion dv6137tx before its motherboard fried (twice in a year, only second time it wasn't on warranty :ashamed:). I had an Intel wifi card, but they replaced it with a Broadcom and I was able to make it work in Fedora 10.

Dell doesn't give an option, but I think they're giving the Intel card.

People seem to have mixed opinions about this machine...some people say heating hasn't affected them as much as the reviews suggest while others have returned it within a week of purchase. Since this happens to be the only notebook (other than a Mac, which is too expensive) that has all these features, I am tempted but I am also a bit apprehensive.

Is it good value for money?

I basically need to run nVidia CUDA, so that automatically rules out the ATI cards on the Studio 16 XPS (which has everything else including the DDR3 memory, FSB, CPU clock frequency, etc.). And Dell India have refused to ship it with an nVidia card instead of the ATI Radeon.
 
^^Whats the issue with ATI graphics ? Never had problem with.. But yea ATI support isn't as strong as nvidia.. Hopefully they will support Xorg 1.6 with Catalyst 9.4 :P
