acc to me

best wud be acer 4736z

just abt everything that a basic home user can ask for and at a very affordable price of ~26-27k

Look out for the Acer Aspire timeline series. The model numbers end with 'T'. You should get one for under 30k. I am not sure which model though 'cos the one I saw was a 15.6" so it cost 35k. The 13" should be for 30k or the 14" I guess. These prices are from Bangalore. This particular series is very sleek looking and great for basic computing. It's got all aluminium body so no fingerprint smudges.

There are a few choices with Dual core processors and 1GB/2GB RAM that are priced under 30K. Prices are approximate (Source: emalldirect)

Lenovo G430 (4152C6Q): 26K

Lenovo G430 (4152C5Q): 27K

Lenovo G430 (4152C3Q): 28K

Lenovo G450 (29492KQ): 29K

Acer Aspire 5536: 27K

If your friend can stretch the budget a bit, Dell Inspiron base model would be in the budget too.

Where exactly did you see a Timeline series laptop selling for 30k?
Usually the laptops with 13 inch screens cost more than 14 inch laptops as they fall in the ultraportable category.

The Timeline series will only be beneficial to those who are away from a current source for long times. Their performance is only marginally better than the Atom processors.

The best option for the OP is Acer Aspire 5738z(15.6 inch screen) or Acer Aspire 4736z(14 inch screen).
The processors in these two laptops are much better in performance when compared to the ULV processors in the Timeline series but the Aspire series laptops cost much less than the Timeline series laptops.

although not at a necessary feature but i suppose the aforementioned acer lappies have HDMI port as well if i am not wrong ?
If yes then do they play 1080p properly (asking because that would make it convenient to hook the lappy to LCD TV) ?

which is better acer 5536 or 4736z or 5738z ???

i probably dont want 15" bcoz they are heavy i travel lot.......

is there any model with 780 chipset in 14" ???

HI Guys, My friend checked online about this acer 4736z and she said it has the "Intel® Pentium® mobile processor T4300" processor but she has more heard about core 2 duos only. Now i am a proccy noob so how can one justify having this processor against core 2 duo ?

30 k is a bit tight on budget for a c2d processor. dual core < core 2 duo, but this is not going to be used for resource heavy tasks, it wont even matter. for your needs even a single core 2.0 ghz procy will be more than enough.

even with video encoding or stuff, while c2d is better, it isnt that you cant dual cores cant mange it.

Actually, I saw the Aspire Timeline 4810T with a 14" screen in Croma for 34,500 today.

Lenovo looks cheep -- check this out --- "http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=5205&review=lenovo+g550"

Its specifically written like "You can stand on this Laptop - Build Quality is very good" and also "Battery life is excellent"...So don't spread unnecessary hatred message here...

BTW..I do agree that Compaq is better than Acer. don't know about samsung laptops...do post the link of samsung laptop reviews.

--for samsung info look on their website - the core 2 duo models of R508 and R510 are available easily but not the dual core models (may be the same as L g550)....i cannot give the latest info on samsung laptops since its not available in my area (4 the link use google)

--lenovo has gud build quality but i was surprised at the glossy finish of the new laptops.

--for under 30k only g430* was available which looks very very cheap with the silver finish...(* i will confirm the model again)
