Hey guys.

My parents are coming back from USA at the end of next month. I was planning to get a lappie from there. I prefer Amazon as using amazon I have lots of choice (more than newegg ) and I can order from here.

Mainly I need a work laptop which can double up as part time entertainment unit.

So HDMI out is must.

1080P playback is must.

Till date I have never used a laptop which is bigger than 14inch and I prefer to stick to ultraportable usually.

But this time, that is not actually needed as this laptop wont be lugged around much in public transport. From office to home and thats it. (few mins drive / auto ride ). Not to mention even 15inchers of todays laptops are lighter than my old HP DV4.

Now the problem is that there is too much choice.

I dont exactly need a powerhouse or laptop with 8+ hours battery backup. But I stumbled upon this : Amazon.com: Gateway NV55C22u 15.6-Inch Laptop (Cashmere Red): Computer & Accessories

This is best bang for buck laptop I could find on amazon. Decent spec, powerful CPU (no gaming needed here ), Blu Ray, 500GB HDD, Numpad are big plus for working and entertainment.

But there is simply too much choice. Enough to confuse yourself. So if anyone can suggest alternative in sub $700 range, it will really help.

I have used Gateway in the past. Built quality of these is not bad at all. Comparable to many top brands.

Nothing else is out there with soo many things in sub $700 range, or am I missing some model?

You can get the Dell Inspiron 15R for $550 which is a good deal IMO (i3 370, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, e-SATA, Bluetooth too). It misses only the bluray part.

Else you can hold on a little and grab a Sandy Bridge based notebook. It will hit the stores by mid-Jan right? Much better IGP compared to current lineup or u can pick the current line up for cheap as they would make way for Sandy.

Wait for sandy bridge. For that price you will definitely get a sandy bridge notebook. And the current arrandale based notebooks will get a price cut too so you'll have lots of cohice

Problem is timing. I must order by 15 or 20th of Jan. I really have my doubts about how many sandy bridge notebooks will be out by then.

Also for last 6 years, I have always avoided buying brand new models of notebooks. Too many times, too many models from top manufacturers have some sort of issue which gets fixed by recall or revised model. This specially happens when new generation of chips come out.

Same will be case with SB notebooks, there will hardly be any reviews out for those as well.

Lets see, I will wait till 15th and then buy whatever is available. Might take a risk on new model this time around.

All the laptops will launch at CES. I think only quad core sandy bridge laptops are launching now though. Dual cores will come only in feb

Honestly for the performance, graphics, and battery life improvements, i would definitely go for a Sandy bridge laptop. Do a bit of research and go for a good vendor with international warranty like Asus or HP

Ended up buying Gateway NV55C30U : Amazon.com: Gateway NV55C30u 15.6-Inch Laptop (Satin Black): Computer & Accessories

Got it when it was on sale. Price went up more than $100 after i bought it :P

Not bad for 28-29k. Sandy Bridge laptops are coming at ridiculous premium. None is cheaper than $900 for what is marginal spec bump over older core i5 laptops. Spending more than $300 for just Sandy bridge did not seem like a good idea for basic use laptop.

This gateway seems to come with above average display (in terms of colours and viewing angles ) according to the video review and not to mention BluRay drive and decent overall config. My cousin and sis have used it in US and they seem to be happy with overall performance and quality considering both of them are using high end laptops ( macbook and Toshiba Qosmio X505 respectively).
