Laptop has become super sluggish - Very high svchost.exe memory consumption

100% virus and its not a new one , many viruses cause svchost.exe to consume a lot of CPU and memory .

You do one thing , just do end process and see , its all is well then its without doubt a virus . Also if you get messages like access denied for some operations which you were able to perform before , again its a virus for eg : try formatting a disk which may have virus ofcourse excluding the System disk .

As from my experience i can state that , Antiviruses can help only if you install them when your PC is clean . Some viruses dont even allow installing of antivirus .

maybe this svchost.exe is not the regular one , you have to remove smad.exe by removing entries from registry , not just deleting it

It may possible that the malware you removed from your system is not completly gone, try to grab the latest malicious removal tool (MRT) by Microsoft and run the full scan,
Also paste the HijackThis log for more details about running process

Forgot to update...

I got my laptop replaced from local company office. I went there to get OS reinstalled but they replaced it completely and now i have a newer Windows 7 laptop.

Hi!
I am new to this board...
I would like to share what I am using and doing for this scenario.
1. install and scan using the following tools, Avast, malwarebytes and ccleaner
2. keep these applications installed for future use.

dude if svchost.exe is taking up so much memory, its definitely a virus... its not unknown for viruses or trojans to infiltrate these system files and then eat up the system memory. best thing will be just to format the whole HDD. not just the windows drive, the whole HDD. you may take a backup of the data and then first scan the backup HDD before restoring your files.

all the malware removal tools, avast and stuff ..will be useless. they will show that they have detected, deleted or disinfected the virus.. but the virus will just keep multiplying and attaching itself to other files and slowly your system files will begin to get deleted by the antivirus program itself.
