I have HP DV6 1154tx Laptop since more then 1.5 years now.

Specs

C2D P8600 (2.4GHz)

ATI Mobility HD4650

4 Gigs DDR2 800MHz

500 gigs 5400 rpm

15.6 - Max res 1366 X 768

Win 7 HP - Single OS only

- Laptop is used for all tasks. Gaming majorly, Downloads, Web Dev etc.

- Since more then a year, I am using notepal infinite as a laptop cooler. Which helps somewhat in long gaming hours.

- While idle, avg temp remains between 45-55 .C [CPU-More, GPU-Less, Airflow- 30]

- While load, avg temp boosts between 80-90 .C [CPU-GPU-all most same, Airflow- 50](touches 100 sometimes)

(Will also Post HwMonitor SS)

- Luckily Lappy has not crashed, nor has got shut down or anything. But it gets heated like Mount Vesuvius in active stat.

What I have done to reduce temps

1) I always keep laptop cooler on and on full fan speed (1400 rpm)

2) Tried cleaning the back (HDD part, ram part and may be WLAN Part), there was not much dust or something else to clean. However could not open entire laptop from back. (Fan, More area of MoBo, Proccy)

3) Memory Management and process management are good from my side. Unwanted tasks dont run, also start up time is 15 secs which is good IMO.

4) Gaming session will not go beyond 30 mins, sometimes 40, but not more then that.

5) Have ordered Another laptop cooler with more fan speed (CM Storm SF-19), but I dont think that's gonna make any significant difference.

My question

1) Is this because of thermal Paste? Can I apply new myself?

2) Is there any other issue related to HW?

warning: n00b help

Check, if under full load how much pagefile is used.

locate the pagefile on a dumping partition with the intial and max size set at the same. pagefile should be @least 1.5 times the installed physical ram, depending on the load you may increase the pagefile to 2 times but make sure that the intial and max are set at the same size.

Other issue could be a old and slow/abused,defragmented hdd

Ambient temperature of the room where the laptop is used, ventilation etc..

Arctic silver should definately help much better than the cooling pad.

First, check the ambient temperature of the room, with temperature only rising from now on you need to be careful. if its above 30 deg c, it could be a contributing factor.

Second, Change the location of the laptop, near better ventilation or artificial cooling. If the room is air conditioned and the ac is working move on to the next step

Check

Third, start with the hdd, defrag, check the location of the pagefile and change if necessary, change the size of the pf and set the intial and max at the same size.

If the hdd is all effed up, replace with an ssd, I think am not sure an ssd should have much lower temperatures.

Check

Clean the Fan, again with the pressurized air, peek in the enclosure with the a torch and check if there' any lint stuck near or on the heatsink and clean. I could not believe myself the amount of lint and dust stuck inside the fan enclosure, at the sides, difficult to see and reach places.

Check

If the laptop still overheats its time to get Artic Silver.

Check

If artic Silver does not help, the HP Laptop itself if the culprit. problem with the heatsink outlet design

Thanks for the input mate,

- Page file size is set for around 5000 MBs(do not remember min-max values), so I guess it's proper, right?

- Also I have not formatted HDD, HDD is with default partition. C with 90% of space and D for backup and restore.

- Defrag is scheduled since day 1, but defrag tool is Microsoft's. Should I try with some another?

- room Temp generally does not go beyond 30. And My usual Usage is after eve, so at that times temp would be around 25. Also Laptop is set according to ventilation of the room.

-Cleaning of fan and heatsink area are remaining, so will gonna try with that.

Thanks again mate.

The pagefile instructions are for XP, I use only XP, dont know about other ms os pagefile instructions.

- I would recommed to change the pagefile size to more than 1.5 times the installed 4gb ram to 7000mb, in xp for the PageFile(PF) you can set the intial and max, let both values be 7000mb. check the values dude cos its important, if the intial and max size are different you will fragment the page file on the partition and make your hdd work more and = overheat = slow sytem.

- I hope you have the Pagefile on D:, if not only Pagefile from D:

- MS defrag tool is more than enough, dont defrag when its not required. Use the MS XP defrag tool to analyze the drive, if it says you should defrag, then you should and only then. if one keeps defragging the drive for no reason you will only frag your drive and make it slower.

- Try to see id there is more dust and lint stuck inside, I use a eveready LED Torch, powerful focus beam and small in size or something similiar like a LED torch built into my victorinox swiss knife that can help to peep the insides of the fan enclosure.

If this does not work , then you know what to do next and next. Hopefully, you resolve the problem, cos, I get pissed a lot when my laptop overheats and I feel sick too, hehe, really.

BTW, HP laptops really suck the most. The laptop manufacturer that sucks the least is Asses, yea, Asses. My next laptop is gonna be an Asses, don't know what Asses is? check this:

I just remembered two more things that could help peeps looking to deal with overheating:

- One can also undervolt the cpu to deal with issues of overheating (google undervolting) and
- on a desktop, you could locate the page file on a separate hdd i.e other than the one with the installed primary partition.
- and, you can apply the thermal paste yourself, there are few threads here that have instruction on the same and you can check youtube videos it would be better if you can source isopropyl alcohol to clean the heatsink if one plans to use artic silver.

Hp laptops are no good in the heating department.
I had a DV6 1211 Ax .. similar to your config just that mine had AMD.
After one year of proper use, it suddenly started giving BSODs and then a week later it refused to start completely. Now my laptop doesnt start , all it shows are the leds blinking.

And yes, mine had similar temparature readings like yours. I tried undervolting and also cleaned my laptop , plus i use a laptop cooler.
All it takes for an Hp laptop to break down is for its warranty period to end. Plus check the HP support forums too. Google it.
All the luck mate.
