Hi All

Need a laptop to use primarily for my college . Should be light enough to travel in trains in Mumbai .
Already have PC at home for gaming , so graphics are a secondary priority .
It should be light and easy to carry around .

Did search a lot around on net , But it can really be confusing :)

Hope you all ppl will be able to help ...

If graphics are not a priority then why the 50k budget ? Anyways since you have specified a good budget I will recommend you check out the Sony Vaio CA15. It has Core i5 2410M, 4gb RAM, 500 gb 7200rpm, 1 gb 6630M, HD webcam, backlit keyboard, weight is around 2.2kg (Specs state higher but its actually lower) You will get it for 52k

P.S. The above recommendations is considering you actually wanna spend more :P. Otherwise for basic purposes there are laptops at much lower price point. Even around 35k. There is also the new Dell Inspiron 14R which is good.

What sort of softwares do you use? Irrespective of what you have in mind and if screen size is not an issue I would wholly recommend the HP DM1z. It is a very capable ultraportable and I run the following software on it :-

Windows 7 professional 64 bit

the gimp

photoshop cs 4

microsoft office 2007

Microsoft SQL Server r2

Fedora core 15 linux 64 bit

Skype

dropbox

wamp server (php dev)

foxit phantom pdf professional

abby fine reader

visual studio

Acrobat Suite

a few games

google chrome

google earth

trillian

mozilla firefox 5

irfanview

handbrake

media player classic

vlc

I take it to office and work on it. It has replaced my MSI Cr400x (core 2 duo t6500, nvidia 8200m, 4gb ram, 14" screen). I get 6 -7 hours of battery life. When i commute using public transport I don't even feel its weight in my bag. It is very sturdy and well built. It will cost you Rs.25,000.

Get the XPS 14... Its great, But not very portable...

Try the XPS 15z or Go for Macbook(Slightly costly though)..

These are your options

was going to recomend u the same.

^^ Yes X930 but its 90k. 13.3 inch screen. Not VFM at the price. You get Vaio SA for 74.5k with i7 2620M, 6gb ram, 1gb 6630m, 640gb hdd, fingerprint scanner, backlit keyboard, hd webcam at just 1.6 kg weight.

Avoid the older gen. 720QM. Heats up more and consumes much more battery(No Nvidia Optimus) plus the GPU it 3 generations old! Avoid the above laptop totally since my guess is it will be a good bread toaster :P
@sudhanshu123 - Try to read the OP's requirements before posting rather than posting just based on a 50k budget. Future such posts will be considered trolling and will be deleted.

you can look for asus u45jc (don't know the street price)

well built but old gen specs core 13 370 + gt310 weighs 2.15 kg(6 cell) with an option of 8 cell battery

or asus a43e for 27,000

with 2nd gen core i3 +2gb ram weighs 2.2 kg

Asus A43E IInd Generation intel Core i3 Processor

or the asus a43sv 45,000

with 2nd gen core i5 with gt540 with 6gb ram weighs 2.2 kg

Buy Asus A43SV-VX134R (Ci5,6G,500G,W7HB,nVIDIA2GB) India, Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, Delhi @ Best Price

or msi x370 27,000

with amd e350 13.3" display

but bad build quality

almost all ultra portables come in 13.3" displays so kind off tough to find a decent 14 incher laptop
