Guys i am having a bad time. I have a Compaq laptop with a 40GB HDD and the OS is WinXP Pro SP2.

I had made some partitions and was formatting those. The first time it went upto 17% and then gave an error the "Windows could not complete the format etc " . So i again set it to format the 20GB partition. In between the laptop restarted. I dont know what happened. It then restarted into windows. Went up to the bar scrolls about 8 to 9 times and then again restarted. Now it gave an error saying that windows could not start ur comp etc and gave the safe mode and other options. I selected normal mode and pressed enter.
It immidiately stopped there for some time and restarted. Now it only showed the ethernet boot screen and since it was not connected it continued to show that only again and again.

I then went into BIOS and selected check HDD for errors. It said no IDE drives detected.
Also when i put the Win 2000 install CD it shows no HDD found.

When i put my ears near the HDD compartment i can hear whirring sound. Coz the case cooling fan is silent most of the times i can hear i whirring sound. Also i took out the HDD and it feels a bit warm. There are no burn marks or any smell or burning.
Also i reset my BIOS to default.

What is the problem ? Is this the end of the HDD or there is some problem with Laptop.

I have no warranty left and will be taking it to the Compaq service center in Clover Center, near MG Road.

Before the formatting and all , i was comfortably writing some programs , burning a songs CD, and copying some stuff around. Also there was linux installed but i dont think its a software problem anymore.

If this has happened to someone else please help me with this.

Most likely the HDD is dead as thie is a tell-tale sign of a Disk on its last legs ->

"Windows could not complete the format etc "

DON"T They'll fleece you out on a out-of-warranty machine!

Take that disk out (Very easy to do, if you already don't know how to) and plonk it into a external 2.5" casing (250/- if you don't have one) and connect it to a desktop to make sure that it is indeed the the disk that is at fault!

99% it is the disk...once onfirmed, get a replacement Hitachi Travelstar or a Fujitsu 2.5" 80 GB or so from Lammy and you'll be good to go!

:( :aww: man... Compaq has got flimsy build quality. This one beat the warranty by 6 months.

I will take it to appos house and see if its alive. Not much data coz i had taken backups.

How much will a 80GB 2.5 incher cost ?? they have 5 yr warranty na ??

Which one will be better ??

Hitachi Travelstar or a Fujitsu 2.5" ??

Nothing to do with Compaq's build quality

The HDD would be Samsung/Hitachi/Fujitsu and with mobile HDDs, you really never know! Even a mild bump at the wong angle at the wrong time will make them give up the ghost while even a hard bump may not make an impact at times!

I think 2.5" drives have a 3 year warranty....

Both the travelstar and Fujitsu are good, definitely better than samsung..But you might want to get a Hitachi given they have a better support base here in India..

Hitachi / Travelstar 5K100 / 80GB / 5400 / 2.5 inch Mobile / HITHDD1022 / ATA / Hard Drive - Welcome to Theitdepot Shopping

May be a little lower in the local market
