Dell or HP Laptops with P8700 processors are good for VT ... u can even go for Dell Studio 15 with i7 720QM processor :D ... any yeah get 7200 RPM HDD in Laptop

But first be sure about whether in BIOS VT option is available or not ... especially for HP

If u choose to go for desktop then I suggest to go with Q6600 processor as VFM ... if got money then invest in i7 platform

I would not suggest a Laptop for long period of Virtualization, but if you want portability go for a Laptop, but make sure you have the option to install 2 drives in the same a 17" based laptop has that option, or you can anyway use a USB/firewire/esata external hdd... The main reason for the same is if you run your host and virtual machines from the same HDD you will see a lot of trashing and eventually both the Host and virtual machine will be affected, performance wise.

Or if you can go with Deskop depending on your budget get a Quad Processor, as much memory as many HDD as you can. I suggest running each virtual machine from a different HDD, similar to what i do, i can run 4 Virtual machines simultaneously with medium load on all without any issues. As Thats my personal lab setup :P

Also would like to know purpose of Virtualization ???

Thanks fr ur reply ! I just need to try with VSphere a new version from vmware ! Presently i am using a P4 system ! Thought of having a new rig for the same !

@prashanthkp >> You are aware that Vshpere is not the next version of VMWare Infrastructure and not VMWare Workstation... If yes, man you should be uber rich to buy a new piece of hardware just for testing things...
Even i buy but of not such high value :P
