Hey,

I have a HP Pavillion dv9000 series: DV9601AU

It overheats and turns automatically...
What should I do???
Its out of warranty, so will have to do everything myself...

Will changing the Thermal Paste be helpful ??? (I have some MX2 left)
Where should I apply it???
Only to CPU or Chipset too???

Only the CPU gets hot, Chipset gets hot only when the Laptop is encoding videos...

I was facing same issue with my Lenovo, just clean the CPU of old paste and reapply new.

I've a HP DV6 that has exact the same specs. I also had faced similar issue and noticed it was the cpu fan that was not spinning. I'd suggest you to check your fan if it is running properly?

There is also a probability of dust accumulated in the outlets from where the side fan dissipates the air ??

Yep! A cake of dirt rather. DarkAngel's cousin faced a similar issue and I have suggested him similar measures - To remove the back cover to expose the heatsink-fan. If the laptop is fairly old, you should see a cake of dirt blocking the vents. Remove it and unscrew the heatsink connecting the GPU/CPU. Clear the dry thermal good using clinical spirit or iso-propyl alcohol (available with chemists). Apply the new TIM on the exposed cores of the GPU/CPU. Screw back the heatsink and switch on the laptop to ensure the fan is spinning. You are set! :)

If your fan isn't spinning, gently pull out the vanes (the central thingy which is held to the shroud), clean the shroud for the dust and drop a bit of oil or WD40 and put back the vanes. It will be held back in place by the magnetic coupling. It should work now. I've done the same to my netbook fan which stopped spinning after dust was accumulated.

I have the same problem with my Asus EEEPC 1000H. But I couldn't figure out how to open it to expose the CPU. I read some guides which said that I will have to remove the keyboard first, but I honestly couldn't do it. A little more help will be appreciated here.

^Are you sure that opening the plastic back cover doesn't help? If the warranty is over, why not give a try. (As in you need not tamper with the sticker here!)

^It wouldn't help much other than blowing those dirt to other areas within the laptop. :P

The best method is to tell the service centre that the vents are clogged and that the fan output has become low as a result, which causes the frequent shut downs. If they are kind enough, tell them to open it in front of you, so you could do with the replacement of TIM yourself. Some of them may oblige, some of them may not.

None of the official service centres will allow that :P they earn a lot from these heating issues by charging 2-3k for simple work

BTW that compressed air method for cleaning air vents is posted in an official HP support document along with pics, here is the link to that document:

Simply opening all back screws doesn't open the EEEPC 1000. I just got the fans replaced but Thermal compound has not been applied properly and as a result, it is still overheating. The warranty is already finished, I bought the Laptop in Aug 2008.

@kidpikoon -people recommending opening the laptop beAware!!!it is pretty complicated to get the to the cpu/Gpu!!!try this @your own risk!!! i needed 5 hrs to reverse assemble my compaq properly and get every thing working in the way before and i still couldn't get to the core!!!try it but be warned its not as easy as a desktop!!!!!

Yes I know that. I realised that when I was half way into it and I simply closed it back. For one, I realised I will have to pry open the thing even after unscrewing it. And my guess is that a Netbook is more difficult than a Laptop.

^True that. That applies to notebooks as well I presume?

This is definitely not meant for noobs. Apologies if I forgot to mention that. :P

When dismantling a notebook, does the screen and keyboard also come 'out'. Planning it for my Acer notebook. It hangs when I leave it on for long DLs. Must be over heating. The bottom is like HOT.

For the Netbook, the keyboard comes out. In case of my Netbook, I was supposed to do some weird acrobatics to get the keyboard off and then remove everything.

Same here too, laptop heats up like hell most of the time. will be doing a complete clean up and applying TIM, maybe next month when free. If anything goes wrong, well I have a second laptop to use ;-)

@mh09ad5578, there are service guides/manuals available for most of the laptops. just need to follow the instructions carefully.
