Friend needs laptop for basic usage like surfing , multimedia etc. Strictly NO gaming .I went through a few threads but most of them looked like gaming laptops or one's with lot of power etc. Ive posted the specific requirements.

* What's your Budget? Anything upto max 50k. Lower the better.

* What will be your primary usage for the notebook be? -Surfing , Office ,movies, presentations in college etc.

* What size and weight considerations do you have? -14-15" ,as light as possible as it will be carried to college at times.

* Any brand that you prefer, or any brand that you detest? No specific brand as such . The laptops needs to be trouble free and reliable and sturdy. No overheating issues etc. Reliably is very important.

* Any other considerations? Matte screen and a good battery life preferred.

Pour in your suggestions please.

I can suggest you only a brand not sure about the config ,best one is DELL do not go for anything else .

^ Lattitude will be out of her budget mostly and aren't they supposed to be heavy and rugged ?

Try to get hold of the Timeline models by Acer. Amazing battery life.

Could you please suggest any particular models in the Timeline series ?

Also considering Dell Studio 14.

I think Timeline X with the Core series proc is here but for your usage even the ULV processors would easily do. The 13" was going for about 32k a few months back , with ULV processor and 8 hours of real world battery life. They look super awesome too :) Really thin n light.

You should look for the new TimeLine X series from Acer. Probably the 4820T / TG model is available in India and are around 50k for the TG version ( i.e. with ATI 5650 ). They come with switchable graphics and you can easily hit 6-7hrs surfing and listening to music on the Intel on-board graphics. There is also a 3820T/TG but don't know about the availability in India. As for your needs, the basic i3 processor should be enough.

For 50k HP dm4 is a great option (for non-gamers). Weighs 2kg, metal construction, 6hrs battery life, Core i5+switchable graphics (ATI 5450), fast 7200rpm 500gb hard disk.

Compared to Acer 4820t, its not a VFM (costs 4k more) but i think it looks better (subjective) and doesn't have the heating issues like acer.
