Please recommend a laptop for me...
  • What's your Budget? 25k + 2k if the excess amount is justified.
  • What will be your primary usage for the notebook be? Web Surfing, Word/Excel/Powerpoint, Statistical, Analytical and Financial Packages.
  • What size and weight considerations do you have? Would prefer a 14 inch for the portability bur won't mind a 15 inch one either.
  • Any brand that you prefer, or any brand that you detest? Don't want Asus, MSI, Wipro and other non mainstream brands. Would prefer Dell, Vaio, Lenovo, Toshiba, HP in that order.
  • Any other considerations? Good Build Quality. Must be Black in color and absolutely NO Glossy Lid. I hate it.

I am thinking of opting for a Core i3 2nd Generation but wouldn't mind getting a Pentium Dual Core 2nd Generation or an AMD Dual Core based one if members recommend it. If the lappy comes with 2GB RAM, I'll upgrade it to 4GB as I'll want to install Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on it. Plan to use it for a maximum of 2 years.

I plan to buy the lappy in the next 15-20 days or so. Just wanted to make sure that I get some expert help and possibly user experiences before buying. TIA.

Matte displays in this range are very rare. You can have a look at- Vostro 1550, its having an "anti-glare" display, and having used a vostro, I can say its at least better than my much glossy vaio, if not close to matte thinkpads.

^^ Not the display bro... I want the Lid/Top/Hood of the laptop to be matte finished or having any finish for that matter except Gloss.

Would love it if the display has a matte finish but even if it isn't, I have no issues but the lid simply cannot have a glossy finish that attracts scratches and fingerprints.

Then the vostro I mentioned perfectly suits your requirement.

^^ SO, does it have a matte finish on the lid?

Also, aren't the Vostro series from Dell meant for business class users and hence the maintenance/repairs and the Extended Warranty a bit pricey as compared to Inspirons?

Yes, it does. My friend owns one.

Business class never affects repairs AFAIK, neither the warranty. They basically focus on build and look, with no fussy features meant for business class people.

^^ That's great. It fulfills almost all my requirements except the size... Will keep looking for more options in the 14" size and if I don't find anything there, will opt for this one.

Guys, is this Inspiron 14R better than the Vostro?

In any case, I plan to upgrade the RAM from 3GB to 4GB. So, I'll probably have to discard a 1GB module from the Inspiron 14R and get in a 2GB in it's place. Is it advisable to do that or should I stick to the Vostro?

Also, is there any Dell dealer who'll customize a Inspiron 14R as per my preference? The dell website offers customisation but forces me to buy Windows 7 Home!

Vostro is any day better than Inspiron (only build wise though).

For upgrading RAM, I'd suggest you to first try out the lappy if 3GB is enough for you as I suppose it should be. If it doesn't, talk to shopkeeper, he may agree to exchange a 2GB kit with 1GB module in return of some cash.

Dealers also customise laptops as per website AFAIK.

^ But won't I need the old RAM module in case of RMA for any major issue with the laptop? Will the ASC not ask me for the original modules that came with the laptop?
