I am facing this weird issue with my laptop where in it just starts and shutdowns in matter of seconds. This happens even before the OS is loaded. Also since the laptop is connected to power supply the Plug and battery LEDs are glowing and when this shutoff happens even these LEDs turn off for 5 seconds or so.
INspite of being connected to power supply. no light glows on laptop dashboard.
Then the battery and plug LEDs glow again but laptop remains in shutdown state as if it is charging while being shut off.

Is this problem any ways related to overheating of components ?? I tried a USB boot to install windows 7 and still that shutdown occurs.

Overheating can cause laptop shutdowns as a fail-safe method. Are you trying to install this on your older faulty hard drive?

Btw yes a new HDD has been installed now and windows 7 never mentioned anything abnormal about this HDD.

^^Laptop was purchased back in 2008 september so no warranty on exists. Do you suggest that i open up the base of laptop and blow out all dust etc ??

Could you post a snap of the back of the laptop? Sometimes, the heatsink section have a dedicated cover (I've seen one on the Dell Inspiron) so you needn't pry apart the entire laptop's back casing.

My Dell Inspiron heatsink had got filled with dust

laptop was auto shutting done after few minutes

It was in warranty called the service rep

opened it and change the heatsink which was completely clogged

try using a mini vacuum cleaner or the blower which is used in electronics store to clear dust from electronics or computers

Ok now trying to open the back of laptop. The fan seems to work fine and there is very little dust over it from what i can see from outside. Finding it how to open the back. does not seem to be easy.

^that might be due to overheating, as you are trying to open up your laptop, try to clean the processor area and the fan, the flan might have clogged dust and the TIM on the proccy might have dried up, apply a fresh layer of TIM on it

I am now not sure what exactly the issue is. This machine has been ON for past 9 Hours and continuous downloading is happening using BSNL 3G connection but even after 8 hours the laptop hasn't shut off but it is indeed hot as we had been out and no fan or anything was ON at home.

^^Just removed all screws and then when i tried to remove the back, i could not figure out as to how to do it and hence dropped the idea of opening the laptop as it may cause physical damage. So absolutely no cleaning was done. But i am still thinking to use a standard vaccum cleaner and blow the back of laptop. Not sure whether it is a good idea or not.

Btw the computer is still ON and downloading since my last post and working great. I just restarted it once now to see whether it boots properly or causes issues while booting.
