Laptop substitute in India - indigeneous idea...!!!

Hi everyone,

I always wanted a laptop but still till date it seems there will never ever be a situation where i will purchase one with the configurations i want...(2 GB RAM; atleast 80 GB HDD; etc etc)...as budget for laptop that i desire will run in almost a lakh...

Now I am thinking of an alternative and need to know what u people think about it...???

MY SITUATION:

I travel say to a different city and stay there for say 1-2 months...then again move to a different place and so on...this essentially means that I am mobile but staying at different locations for longer periods...

WHAT I AM THINKING:

I need basically a computer system when I am say in delhi for 1 month and again in Kanpur for say 2 months like this...its NOT that i need it while travelling in train for that day...

SO what if i purchase say.....

A. a FLAT MONITOR (may be 15" or 17") along with

B. APC 500 VA UPS (which acts as laptop battery for me) and

C. The smalllest available cabinet (CPU Box) so that I can put 2 GB RAM; Intel Motherboard; P4 3.2 Ghz; CD/DVD writer; 1 or if possible 2 HDD and say antec smps...

I am thinking (correct me if i am wrong) that this way:

Cabinet (with everything inside) + Flat Monitor + UPS (smallest) can act as my laptop at different locations....

Cabinet + Flat Monitor + UPS = One suitcase = Virtual Laptop

I understand that obvious disadvantage is that I cannot use it while travelling thats when on move but only at different prolonged staying locations...

MY QUESTIONS TO YOU KNOWLEDGEABLE PEOPLE:

Q1. How far is my idea feasible / practical / implementable / insane / sane....?????

Q2. What are potential risks / problems/ difficulties I may face....????????

(apart from not being able to use while on move)

Q3. Is there any modification/ refinement/ alternative to above idea where I can have best configurations like i stated above at minimum cost...????

I would seriously urge that anyone and everyone to please reply to this concept of mine as to how far is it implementable and is it worth it....??????????

You may add/ suggest/ criticise or for that matter put forth whatever u feel is ur reaction to above idea...

thanks again for ur time and patience....

thanks again...

best and warmest regards,

sunando

p.s. IN case u feel i should go ahead with the idea please say me which company's cabinet box is SMALLEST and BEST and can accommodate Intel 915 motherboard for above configurations that i desire....THANKS SO MUCH MUCH FRIENDS.....

answer to Q1 and Q2. - implentable wiht lotsa difficulties...
i say so cuz first thing a ups is not a light thing u can carry about (even if its the smallest), secondly a flat lcd can be very fragile and carrying it about in a train or a bus is not the best thing to do...and also u can hardly expect the ups to last more than 30 min..so much for serving the purpose of a battery.

For one thing, a small cabinet like the one you desire will not be able to provide proper ventilation for a P4. I just bought a small cabinet, and the problem is that the PSU in this one comes very close to the ram sticks (5mm).

The only decent idea i can think of is get a proper gaming type cabinet with a handle or something, and have somethhing done to it so you can mount your TFT onto the right side of the cabinet. You'll have to work out issues such as balancing the contraption, protecting the screen in transit,.... Moreover, such a solution will still not be portable enough as you won't be able to fit the UPS in anywhere, not to mention the keyboard,....

The cheapest Acer Celeron M notebooks are available for around 30k. They perform reasonably well, and are worth considering if you are looking for a portable solution.

Well there are solutions like SFF(Small Form Factor) PC's from MSI/ASUS/Shuttle which are available here in india. I think shuttle has also started distribution in India. They are small as hell and do the job well. But you will have to forget about overclocking though. Also carrying a LCD is a good idea but you need to make an arrangement for proper packing of the LCD.

Ive been thinking about just carrying those external harddisks ,very neat and mostly usb enabled .
Yeah thats quite convienient ! Plug them into a comp at any cafe, and you have all your data !

Off topic : You can use just about any standard hard disk, or even a laptop sized 2.5" hard disk (for convenience) as an external hard disk. Just get an external hard disk casing for them , these external boxes for your hard disk help interface the hard disk's IDE pins with a USB/Firewire port thereby cutting out the need for any of the expensive "specialised" external hard drives. These external drive enclosures tend to be quite reasonably priced around ~ 800 bucks or so.

Since LCD monitors anyway aren't cheap, you will end up spending quite a packet on this setup....why not just get a decent low end lappy....upgrade the HDD to a 80 gig for 4K ...use the existing HDD as an external storage device...Slap on some RAM....(512meg sticks come for 3K) and your total cash outflow won't be too much more than what you plan.....
What do you need 2gig RAM for anyway...Just thinking out loud...But if you were into video editing, 80Gig wouldn;t have been sufficient.....If you were into gaming, you'd have mentioned sumthng abt GFX cards....coming to think of it, i can't think of why someone would couple 80Gigs HDD with @gig RAM..Please enlighten.....
