Hi Guys

One of my friend wants a laptop to run Maya 3D animation software.

His budget is 30- 40k.

- Monitor: Better if it supports wide-screen, since it is used for animation

- No preference on Brand

- Long battery life as animation program has to run overnight and if the power goes out the battery has to withstand during the outage period

- Also better heat dissipation

- Plus quick video rendering

Please suggest a suitable laptop for the purpose.

Budget can be stretched up to 50K.

Ok..194 views and no replies :S

I came up with the following short list (rather long list) :ohyeah::
[I kept the search focused on a Discrete Graphics card (pref 1 GB with D11 support) - since it is going to run a 3D software & a 15" display and minimum Core-i3.]

  1. New Dell XPS 15: i3 + GT 420M --> Rs. 46800
  2. Acer 5742G or 5845G --> 40/43 k (I checked the 5742G - not very happy with the Display quality and speakers sound quality)
  3. Asus K42JA-VX032D/ K42JA-VX048D --> HD 5730 2GB, Basic difference is i5/i3, 640 GB/ 500 GB HDD -- no idea where to see them
  4. Sony EB36 - HD 5650, Full HD --> the priciest of them all but good build and siaplay + audio quality -- heard negative reviews on battery and heating
  5. MSI GX640 --> The only laptop with a high end Graphics card in this range, 49k according to one site..Not sure if available at all, if at that price --> Then a definite buy.
  6. MSI GE600 --> With HD 5730 - Not sure if this also is available and where can I see them.

The less pricier options include:

  • New Inspiron 15R/14R (512 MB 550v card) & M501R (with AMD Triple core and iGB 550v)

Pls help me arrive at a Top 3 among them for suggesting to my friend.

XPS 15 with i3

I am on same boat

I ordered XPS 15 with i5/4Gb/640GB especially for Maya/Photoshop(Still learning)/VS

I say go for it

@teja:
How long do you have the XPS? Does it run cool? How abt battery life? And have you opted for the optional Full HD screen? If not, How is the std. 1366x768 screen? Thx for your replies..

^^ I am yet to receive it

Dell India is messing alot

Not even one Indian has received it from dell

So wait for a while and then give an order

Maybe in a Month

That's bad :@
You would have paid the money already? If so, you can demand some goodies to make up for the delay along with the order :cool2:

Even though, I might end up buying on my friend's behalf and giving it to him, I need a couple of more suggestions and then let them choose the model.

After all it's his money :bleh:

Friends..Please suggest a few more options (even if its not from my shortlist) for me to narrow down.......
