Latency problem

Hi Gang, I need your inputs on a problem I have been facing for a while now.
I have a 256k UL connection from Tata. I play WoW and used to get latency of 600-700 , 6 months back. Lately its been really bad. Latency is anywhere between 900-1500 on average, making the game unplayable often. But when i check the connection speed, it shows 200+ kbps. Any idea what could be causing it?

latency depends on distance i think... it doesnt matter on speed
i have experienced 256kb and 2mb bsnl... both get same latencies
 
Problem is I find it hard to make the customer service guy understand the problem. He says, "Speed is fine, then what is the problem you are facing?".

Same connection used to give 400 less latency 3 months back. Dont understand...

I am thinking of moving to BSNL. Hope that will make things better.
 
Latency changes according to routing. Maybe your ISP changed the routing. As of now, airtel is the safest bet for games as most of them get real good pings (50-70) to local servers, as well as singapore servers
 
Well, Airtel does not provide connection in my area, and BSNL says they don't have any modems in stock, looks like I don't have any options left. Just have to wait...
