LCD monitor backlit dead

Does backlit of an LCD monitor die after a period of time i.e around 3~4 years
My friend had a LCD which suddenly stopped working and the repair guy said that it is dead and he needas to get a new monitor as cost of replacing would be high

Same happened to my office lappy LCD. Backlight dead. IBM guys said they had to replace the screen.

I guess you have no option but to chuck that monitor and get a new one.

But what is the reason for it being dead ??

End of Life I guess and older LCD tech was not very reliable so I guess that is the problem
