^ Yep, for larger sizes Plasma displays tend to work out a bit cheaper. Plasmas arent made for sizes smaller than 32" , and LCD's are generally recommended in those cases.
LCD vs Plasma is a never ending debate, but here's a couple of pointers to help you select :
- LCD's have better brightness than Plasmas (most specs show Plasmas as having higher brightness, but the method of measuring brightness for Plasma's is not the same standard that LCD's use)
- Plasmas rule in terms of Color Saturation and you will see some of the most accurate colors, Plasmas have a color pallete running into billions of colors, whereas most LCD's tend to be around 16.7 million colors (some argue that the human eye cant really distinguish that many colors)
- Plasmas have absolutely sharp blacks, whereas LCD's still tend to display 'greyish' blacks i.e. Contrast ratios are better on Plasmas.
- Plasmas are better equipped with faster refresh rates, whereas tpical LCDs tend to be a bit slower (of course refresh rates have improved with recent models especially after the LCD was being targetted for PC usage)
- LCDs do not suffer from burn-in like Plasma's i.e. a ghost image is formed on the screen due to a continuous image being displayed on screen like a channel logo . This means using the Plasma as a computer screen or for playing video games is generally not adviseable. However recent plasmas have methods to combat burn-in.
- LCD's are generally cooler running than Plasma's
- Lifespan is a tad better for LCD's, but recent Plasma's claim a lifespan that is just as high as LCD's
- Plasma's are a bit heavier and more fragile than LCD's
- Viewing angle is apparently better on a Plasma, but most LCD's now claim to offer a wide viewing angle as well
Hope i've summed up all the points,
In the end, its best to take a trip down to your store and have a side by side viewing comparison between the two to best judge.
