A close friend is going to Dubai and has offered to get an electronic item for me. I am in need of a 40" LED TV. Would these be cheaper in Dubai compared to India? If yes, by how far? and what company is a good bet when bought abroad (possibly with Onsite warranty)?

The limit applied on an adult if I am not wrong is 35000 INR. So in rupees if the TV cost say 50k, then would the 36% be applied on 15k of full 50k of the TV price?

AFAIK , there is a duty of 36% on TV import regardless of free allowance etc, so duty will be around 18K

I totally would differ on this 36% duty thing, though the official word out is 36% DUTY is charged it all depends on how well you can plead with the custom officer.

From my experience of travel between the Middle East and India I can still see people bringing in TV, but still not paying entirely the 36% duty. My last flight itself had 3 people bringing in TV's. First of all there is a lot of price hunting that you have to do in Dubai, to get the best offer. Walking into the Mall of the Emirates or Sharaf DG, LULU, just aint going to fetch the best deals. You can get a clue of the approximate pricing you might have to look into. If there are good offers at LULU and Carrefour, at the time your friend is buying then its a good bargain. Mostly they have stopped International warranties.

Just to make it clear what I want to convey by an example tactic my friend employed. He brought a 40" Samsung TV, and put it into a LG 32" box. The TV went in smoothly and he put in a lot of styrofoam particles. The price at which he got the TV is 20K. He lands into India and pleads with the custom officer, saying sir this is my one time dream and being slogging out hard, i'm a labourer worker and dont have much to surrender, also totally goes to the extend of being sober. Finally the officer ask him to pay a duty of 5k for the TV.
Totally ended up paying 25k. Saved another 25-30k of the market price. He employed the same tactic twice, which really surprised me and guess what it, worked!!

I was just clarifying doubt raised by op. There are and will be loop holes and pleading , begging, in front of a customs duty officer may work. Or may not

The limit of importing any and all goods is INR 35k per person. If your TV falls within that range, and you have the necessary documents (bill/invoice) to prove it then you can walk out with your head held high with nary a worry.
If your TV is above that limit, then you will have to 36% duty on the total amount. I know that cases have lots of variations and you may get charged duty only on the difference above 35k, but that is a long shot. The customs officials will probably charge you duty on the whole amount.
If you try shenanigans like undervaluing the cost on the bill the customs officials will catch on to you real quick.
Size limitations on the TV are usually 40". Just last year it was rumored to have been revised to 32". But this is a hit or miss.

All the best.

See, there is an Indian style of 'work around' here for you. In Dubai, there are some shops which allow you to book the TV in UAE price, the item will be delivered back in India from an Indian shop without making payment in India. It was a rumor first, but I got it confirmed from GITEX from a famous Indian brand's shop.

Yes i agree with adder.
Just yesterday it came to my notice that the exemptions granted for LCDs purchased from overseas, are totally removed. A couple of years back, there was an exemption upto 25,000 and then it was made 35,000 and 36% duty is required to be paid only if this amount is exceeded. but now this exemption is overruled and 36% duty will be applicable regardless of the price .

The reason given is to curb people who travel often getting TVs for commercial purposes.

But 36% is applied on the INDIAN price or the price in the country in which the TV was purchased from ?

Seriously this is bullshit

This isnt bullshit at all.

The market is flooded with parallel imports.

Its a good thing that they are withdrawing support for imported tvs too now..

earlier, the tv tax structure was such that tvs below 40 inches were exempt from duty. that is the only reason the tv companies introduced the 39 inch tv for india in the first place.. but recently this slab was removed, and duty was chargeable even on smaller tvs.

PS: to the OP, if warranty is not a big deal for you, you can get the tv cheaper by atleast 10000 rupees even here in india. these are the grey market imports. if you buy from a proper source, you will get genuine brand new tv minus the official warranty.

thanks for your reply guys. I think I shall buy it here in Bangalore. But I am totally unaware of what models.I dint want any 3d or smart feature.Just good picture and sound quality for my parents.
Could you guys help me out or shall I open another thread for it?

Just a normal question, since people been discussing imported TV..

Dubai has tv pieces which offer international warranty (talking about the ones which show Indian flag on the box for warranty validity). Any chance of warranty being claimed here even if the bill is not present?
