TRAI Launched Its Own Internet Speed Test App For A Reason

TRAI had launched its own mobile app for testing the internet speed called “MySpeed”. The regulatory body has done so for a reason. It wants to ensure that all Indians get a better internet connection with promised speed and network quality.

With this app, TRAI wants all of us to test our internet speed and report it to them so they can take required actions.

They want all internet users (fixed line broadband and wireless internet including 2G/3G/4G) to test and report their internet connection details (speed and network quality) to TRAI servers.

This data would then be analysed and published on regulator’s analytics portal.

After getting sufficient user data about network quality, TRAI will float a consultation paper for setting a benchmark of quality of service (QoS) and internet speed.

What is "promised speed" in this context? 3G, 4G etc are just terms to define the technologies with certain theoretical max speeds used for delivering data. While the standards define the theoretical max that should be possible with each technology, they don't have any clear minimum data rates defined. So, it doesn't matter if you get the same 1 Mbps speed using either 3G or 4G. They are still designed as 3G and 4G.

Service providers will obviously advertise the theoretical limits of the technology. For example, they might go "Upto 21 Mbps" for a 3G connection and "Upto 100 Mbps" for a 4G connection.

But practical good speeds that you can expect on average are like below.

1.5 Mbps for 3G
2.5 Mbps for 3.75G
4~6 Mbps for 4G.

Of course these speeds will come down when you are on the move.

I got 5.97 mbps with 4G on Airtel Hyderabad..
Looks like Ok speeds, unless Airtel has fixed the speed tests .

Their definition of broadband starts at 256kbs. They might want to increase that.

So much of this is dependent on time of day. Faster speeds at midnight, lower in the early evening.

a good signal does not mean fastest speed if the network is busy.

There was a paper earlier which surveyed people around the country and 50% could not tell the difference between 2 or 3G in terms of speed.
