LG Blu-Ray Writer WH10LS30: Around 9000/-

Is buying a bluray writer sensible ? Are blank bd's available easily ?
I already have a bluray player with my home theatre.

Also, I have no clue about bluray writers.
Are they region locked ?

Suppose I get blurays from the US. Can I make copies or will there be a region issue ?

Please help!

Quite sensible. Locally, availability of the blanks may be an issue. I order from eBay, no worries, good prices.

You can crack that with a region-free firmware, allowing you copies of BDs bought elsewhere.

Alternatively, you can use AnyDVD HD to rip BDs to your computer, transcode and burn on blank BD-Rs.

Why are BD Writers prices not falling... Its ages since they were launched & should be cheaper now.. .:(
Even I would like to know the same. Especially when compared with the price history of DVD's and CD's

because sony charges a hefty royalty to the use of their patented technology :@

ok, great. but the high price is the main cause most of the people are not buying. 9k is too much. lets wait for a violet/yellow/pinkray writer to release only then price of bluray will drop. :P

If you understand the colour scheme Vibgyor then i guess we may have a violet ray coming in the future to trump the blue ray but that is like waiting for india to get 100mbps broadband across every house.

But if its Sony who comes out with it, then I really doubt they would reduce prices of Blu-Ray devices. They're holding all the cards at the moment :(

It should have been cheaper since now Pr0n has adopted it.. Writers may have the patent issues but then what's stopping media companies from getting out generic version of blank media or even the pirates in china burning on these cheapo media their stuff...

They don't charge any royalties and i don't believe they have any patents.
Panasonic, Philips and Sony, who own the majority patents for Blu-ray disc (BD) technology, are currently working with other Blu-ray patent holders to establish a one-stop-shop license for BD products. This license, which covers essential patents for Blu-ray Disc, DVD and CD, will be introduced in the middle of this year. The move may allow third parties to engage into Blu-ray business at lower price and with fewer complexities.

The fees for the new product licenses are $9.50 for a Blu-ray disc player (down from $30) and $14.00 for a BD recorder. The per disc license fees for Blu-ray disc will be $0.11 for a read only disc, $0.12 for a recordable disc and $0.15 for a rewritable disc. As a result of the efficiencies obtained with the combined license offering, the royalty rates for Blu-ray disc products are expected to be at least 40% lower than the current cumulative royalty rates for individual Blu-ray disc, DVD and CD format licenses.

Oh i see but why single out Sony.

OT but read somewhere that Sony has a market share of 90%+ on Blu-ray players (including PS) and owns most of the replication infrastructure.
