Hi, I need your valuable advise. I have been looking to buy a laptop for quite some time now. Still haven't been able to finalize a model

What's your Budget? 60K
  • What will be your primary usage for the notebook be? Programming, watching HD/3D movies(mainly by connecting laptop with LCD tv through HDMI cable),
  • What size and weight considerations do you have? lightweight (not more than 2.5 kg)
  • Any brand that you prefer, or any brand that you detest? No issues with any of the brands
  • Any other considerations? Must have : Backlit keyboard, a decent graphics card (mainly for watching HD movies.. I'm not much of a gamer).

So far , I have shortlisted the following four laptops:

1.) Dell XPS 14z - Problems : I've heard this laptop has a lot of complaints(wifi, display issues). Can someone throw some light on it?

2.) HP dm4-3022tx - Problems : Not available anywhere. Has HP discontinued this model?

3.) Lenovo U400 - Problems : No backlit keyboard (?)

4.) Sony Vaio VPCCA35FN : Problems : a little on the heavier side. I've heard Sony has discontinued this model. Can someone confirm?
If there's any other laptop that you think is good for my requirements, please suggest that too.

Thanks.

You can get the Thinkpad x220 although it has a display port option instead of the HDMI port. You can get a converter. for 60k i.e 1200 US$ you can import a core i7/9 cell/4gb ddr 1333mhz/integrated broadband - 3g sim card slot/Windows 7 professional 64 bit/ 320gb 7200rpm/12.5" ips display/720p webcam. Its ultraportable and will last you atleast 10-12 hours on a single charge. It is not back lit but comes with the Thinklight which is extremely good. it comes with Intel's HD 3000 graphics and can handle 1080p playback easily. You can kit it with an msata ssd along with the standard hdd/ssd option. It has brilliant build quality and comes with a spill resistant keyboard(hence the lack of keyboard back lighting) and 1 yr international warranty honoured in India. You can extend the warranty by 3 years for a mere Rs.7000. It weighs 1.8 kgs with the 9 cell battery.

Thanks for your reply sunny27. I'm not really looking for an Ultrabook. The four models that I have specified in my original post are all 14" laptops. Moreover, a 1GB graphics card is a mandatory requirement coz I intend to watch 3D movies as well (by connecting my laptop with 3DTV through HDMI). You mentioned about the Thinklight in Thinkpad x220. I believe it's there in Lenovo U400 as well (not sure though). Can you please explain what exactly a Thinklight is?

Also, can you suggest which model is better among the options specified in my original post?

+1 for #[member='sunny27'] 's reco... The X220 may not have a backlit keyboard but it has the awesome ThinkLight... (the image below is of the thinklight & not the x220)

Also here are some battery specs for the x220 http://gizmodo.com/5898313/5-reasons-to-spend-more-than-500-on-your-next-laptop

The Thinkpad x220 is not an Ultrabook. The Thinkpad X1 is an ultrabook. If you want, you can opt for the T420/T420s with a 14 inch display and upto 1600x900 resolution with all the above mentioned specs along with an Nvidia Quadro for 65-75k. The T420 is a tank and is featured here - http://www.techencla...20#entry1728694

Those are actual Battlefield management systems and communication systems featured at the Defexpo 2012 @ Delhi last week. This actually shows the reliability and mission critical capabilities of this laptop and nothing can be more critical and demanding than the roles assigned to it in the above images.

The T420 weighs 2.4 Kgs, so its within your accepted weight range.

#s_anuj : that looks like a T400/T410. Is it yours?

@sunny27.. 60K is the max that I can spend. I cannot go beyond that. Hence T420 is out of my budget.

@JuGGa.. CA35 and CB35 are two different models. CA35 is a 14" model while CB35 is 15.5"
