Linkin Park is back!

This is old news. Also the new lead singer is a Scientologist who does not believe in psychology, mental illness or depression - which is such a shitty hill to die on and an embarrassment for the band and to Chester's memory.

I don't care about being woke or not, but as a huge LP and Chester fan, it just does not sit well with me. Wouldn't feel like the LP I knew without him anyway.

Chester was goat but the truth is LP is Mike’s band and he can do whatever he wants with it. Chester was not even among the founding members.

Reddit is a cesspool in itself.

First, Scientology crap works for USA. It is not an issue for the rest of the world.

Second, no religion is free from issue. Even Catholicism has a history of suppressing and ignoring mental health issues.

Third, just because someone is born into a religion doesn’t mean they adhere to it. So many of the artists should be boycotted just because they were born into one religion or the other. Armstrong was born into Scientology.

Fourth, if we say Scientology is a cult, to me it is a religion, then we must accept how retaliatory the cults tend to be. It is understandable if Armstrong wants to keep her separation from the church a secret.

Fifth, if art and artists cannot be separated then as much as artist defines art, art also expresses artist’s values. Listening to the lyrics of Armstrong’s band Dead Sara and her interviews we find that she is very vocal about mental health issues and resents the Church.

Sixth, We should enjoy the music. Internet is like that maholle wali aunty who just craves drama so she adds mirch masala and lies to get that hit of drama.

Seventh, Chester was a singer I idolized. But his true memory lies with his family and bandmates. They know what justice they are doing to their memory of him. We only knew the voice, they knew the man. Let’s not be disrespectful of the people who knew him and their decision to carry on the work they began together.

Lastly, reddit is the worst source to get any news. Reddit: Harris will win. Reality: Trump won by big margin. (Similar thing happened in 2016). And there are so many instances. Even in this case, Reddit was celebrating Bennington’s mental unwell and estranged son’s ramblings. Whereas the widow of Bennington openly supported Armstrong.

I have begun to discount everything said on reddit. I go there only for memes now.
Some unconfirmed rumour they will come to India next year
These rumours have been floating since early 2010s. Let’s hope they do come here after all. But I think the prices will sky rocket so much that I won’t be able to go. LOL.

I agree with almost everything you've written and especially reddit being a drama wh*re and very unreliable. Though Scientology and all religions are cults, imo, and the bigger or more powerful a cult, the worse they are. There are a lot of documented evidences even outside of reddit of how they have exploited and tortured artists. Lastly, the one part I clearly disagree with is - Let’s not be disrespectful of the people who knew him and their decision to carry on the work they began together.

To each their own, I guess, but if the history of music is anything to go by, most bands hardly care about their legacy over the making-more-money part. Greed ruins bands all the time and they make stupid decisions more often than not. Still, if you or anyone else likes their new music, it's none of my business and I understand completely that people are free to like whoever they like. I just thought it pertinent to bring up this context in case someone else also shared these views and was unaware of it.

So, as per the statement, Armstrong is a victim of the Church?

You may disagree with their right to carry on their own work, but I think we have no right to tell anyone what to do if they aren’t literally hurting someone else.

I don’t understand from where did the argument of greed feature in. Shinoda has been making music for a very long time and non-stop, music is his passion, collaborating with small artists, giving them shoutouts, etc. Rob Bourdon felt his heart was not in making music anymore, he decided to stay out of the reunion, money wasn’t an issue for him. He and the band mates are millionaires. They have enough money to buy some hedge fund manager and multiply their wealth but they want to pursue their passion of creating art continuing the legacy they worked hard to build themselves in the first place.

Unless she comes out and tells us that she was also a victim. Until then, she is a willing participant.

I have no right to tell them or anyone else what to do, yes. But I can dislike or criticize anyone if their actions require that. Artists and celebs are not immune from criticism, are they?

The last part applies to any millionaire or billionaire. You would not discount a Murthy or a Musk or Bezos that they have so much money, they can retire and not worry about money ever, so all they do is not out of greed anymore. SRK still dances at weddings (just saw the news on that in this week's newspaper) and is probably the richest Indian artist.

I understand we have different opinions on this subject, but let's just leave it at that and not derail this thread any further. Subjective opinions are just that, subjective. Let's just agree to disagree on the rest.

I think, there is a need to reconcile these two arguments. If the church is dangerous, which again is useless to us because all religions have some issues as we discussed just now, then she not talking in favour in itself is a big telltale.

On the other hand, I think she is innocent until proven guilty. She needs to actively propagate church doctrine or sponsor it to be called a Scientologist. Which she hasn’t. So, don’t understand this unjust criticism.

Though, this is not essential, since religion is not an issue to us as we just discussed.

But I can dislike or criticize anyone if their actions require that. Artists and celebs are not immune from criticism, are they?
Fair. They are not immune from fair criticisms. A lot of people have begun to treat someone else’s creation as their own, that’s unfair to the creator.

So, it is a reductive generalisation and has very little to do with anything specific to Linkin Park.

I think, opinions need discussions to become valid. Just because I have an opinion doesn’t mean it is factual, informed or substantiated. Also, The thread is Linkin Park is back. I don’t think this is derailment per se.

These discussions is why TE exists. Engaging with each other respectfully with differing opinions. Interesting and enlightening arguments.
If the thread is going off topic, we will split it. For now I would say its completely on topic.

Reddit is extreme-left, so it doesn't reflect the ground situation in US which is fine.

It is ironic you combined family and bandmates together in your sentence, when the family is clearly not on the same page.

Chester has had a estranged relationship with his mom. It is well known. His mother also got confused between the spat that happened between Grey Daze and Chester and misconstrued it with Linkin Park, hence her statement. Chester was not at good terms with his mother.

Chester’s son is mentally unwell from some time now. He received restraining order from Chester and his wife back then for his dangerous behaviour. The son has propagated conspiracies that his father was killed by Shinoda. His views come from a very conspiratorial place.

His family was his the then wife Talinda and the other children, who have supported Armstrong. Hence I brought them in.

It is very messy and I understand how media lies by omission to add masala and garner views. It becomes difficult for people not intimate with the topic to understand what lies beneath.

I heard the new LP stuff and it reminded me of pink. Well made music but couldn't capture the sound of the old LP
Chester’s voice had that nasality which gave it a deep melancholic feeling. Fry screams too were grittier.

Emily’s (new singer) voice is more open. She has her own shouty version of scream, which isn’t as gritty but has a distinct aggressiveness.

TBH Chester was one of a kind, and that’s why he could stand out among a sea of singers. He cannot be replaced.

However, the new album does sound distinguishably Linkin Park, from guitars to rap to samples to the call and responses.

Let's assume that broadband doesn't exist for a second.
You're not wasting your precious dialup on a Scientology deep dive.
....and you just bought this album as a CD.

Does it sound and feel like it's LP ?
I'd say yes....some of the songs do sound like they do belong on an LP album.
Two Faced amd Emptiness Machine I liked especially.

If Chester was an 11/10 , I'd give Emily a solid 8/10
