Linksys wrt54gc wireless router installation problem ...

My cousin just bought a Linksys wrt54gc wireless router. After making all the connections, the installation program reports "unable to detect router". Any one else face a similar problem ? He has Win XP Prof.

Thanks.

What installation program are you talking about :S. You dont need to install anything to start using a wireless router. Just connect the router to ur dsl/cable modem, connect the primary computer using a wire, switch on wireless (typically with a web browser interface) and you are done! Atleast thats all I had to do to start using my netgear wgr614

The Linksys router has a Windows-based setup and installation utility ( on CD ) for finding the respective device on the network and gaining access to the web interface.

the default LAN ip on most routers (wired/wireless) is 192.168.1.1

some ISPs use the same ip for their WAN gateway.....

I had a similar conflict on my router sometime back

if that's the case, u may need to change ur LAN IPs to preferably a different private ip range.....

say 100.1.1.n

^^Eh I'm no networking guru but IIRC 100.1.1.X is probably not a valid lan address. I have the modem set to 192.168.1.1 and my wireless router set to 192.168.0.1. Enable DHCP on ur wireless router and you should be fine!

that's correct...it really isn't :ashamed:

just that that's what i chose and it worked fine :P

it shouldn't ideally be a 100.x.x.x address but since the LAN IPs are NATted by the router, hence no conflicts

ideally, 1 should choose say 10.10.x.x

i advised against 192.168.1.1 as that is typically the most common gateway address used by local ISPs

All connections were done by the technician sent by the shop from where he bought the router. They assumed the cables were faulty so they used fresh ones. Did not help. Bought another router, same prob. My cousin doesn't live close by so I can't check other settings.
The setup/installation util doesn't permit changing any settings because it says "cannot detect router".

Please tell us your setup a bit clearly! Where is the router connected?? I mean, where are the incoming and outgoing cables going to? Is it connected between a DSL modem and the computer's ethernet card?

The internet connection is provided by a local company via LAN. This cable was connected to the port labeled "WAN" ( I think ) on the router. The LAN port on the mobo was connected to the port labeled "LAN" on the router. That's it, apart from the power supply.
btw, the status of router indicated by the tiny lights on the front was OK.

Question is whether DHCP is enabled in the tcp/ip config. If your internet company gave you a static LAN IP, then you might wanna disable that on the host computer. Your router will use the IP that was initially assigned to the computer.

You actually do not need to use the setup CD. Try and initially connect the router with the PC. Remove the ISP lan cable from the router.

Try and ping the default IP address that has been set for the linksys. Like they said above the ip is 192.168.1.1.

To bypass the DHCP set your PCs TCP/IP address to something like 192.168.1.2.

If your able to ping the router then I guess your on your way.
