It doesn't matter what you install, basics of all (free) Linux is same. Fedora (free version of Redhat) is best to use. You will get RPMs or source code to install many things.

Use VM player to install as many Linux flavours (CentOS, OpenSolaris, Fedora, Ubuntu etc). Your system resources will be the only bottleneck.
