@Decadent_Spectre ... Your heart seems to be set on buying a LiteOn DVD writer - as was mine after having had extremely good experiences with their CD Writers for the last few years.

But I did some research on the CDFreaks forums and it was clear that there are only 2 DVD writers worth using - the BENQ 1640 and the new NEC writers. Plextors used to be the King of the Hill in Optical drives but now the latest model is a rebadgered BENQ 1640 as is the Sony 810 !!

I did feel strongly about having a LiteON so I did the next best thing - I bought a LiteOn DVD-ROM which I think was a good buy at 1500/- the model is SOHD-16P9S - GREAT DVD reader !!

What problems exactly and what media. Also get the latest firmware from the Benq site. Personally using 1620, latest firmware and MBI media with avi's. NO problems at all.

Get the latest BSLB firmware ... and if you want this firmware with RPC1 (region free) then get it from ......

http://tdb.rpc1.org/

the Benq 1640 firmwares are near the bottom of the page.

Have you installed QSuite 2 ? I found that I need to disable Solid Burn in QSuite 2 for my setup whilst I hear other people say that SB makes their burns better. If I have Solid Burn on than my Moser Baer 8x disks would burn at 4x only - with it off I burn the same disks at 12x.

I got my drive a couple of weeks back and I must have burned about 50 disks alread - not a single coaster yet.

...nah i mean that somehow it wont accept AVI files if i select the output on a DVD ...it works when i try to burn it onto the same disc but with VCD selected

You are trying to convert a DIVX/XVID to MPEG2 -> PEBKAC! You need to use an AVI-> MPEG2 converter program like DivxToDVD
