Long Range solution with a single AP/Router

The most powerful solution I have seen is the Metal 2Hpn from Microtik - 1500 mW of WiFi. Minus points - 2.4GHz only, capped at 100 Mbps due to limitation of PoE.

It looks like an AP, does its OS support a repeated function or does it have to be a wired AP?

If you want to use repeaters, I would suggest to avoid the same. You get cheaper stuff which would do the same.

However, in answer to your question - yes. It supports repeater function.
