I am thinking of getting my sister a Mp3 player for her birthday. It has to be:

*Cheap: 3K or near abouts. The cheaper the better, I am not feeling too generous.
*Easy to use: She has the technological ability of a chipmunk.
*Available in stupid colors. For example, pink.

As far as I can see its a choice between Phillip's and Transcend's, so far.
Was looking at the: Transcend 650 4 GB MP3, Philips SA 1928 2GB MP3, FM, Transcend 850 4GB MP3/MP4
I got the prices from this page: MP3 Players, Ipods | Digital MP3 Players | Video Mp3 Player | Cheap MP3 Players | Buy MP3 Players
Any suggestions?

Do you need FM?? If not, what about iPod's?? You'll get 2GB iPod shuffle within 3k.

1. Great sound quality

2. Comes in pink and other colour's too....!! :)

But....

1. Requires some knowledge to put the music(iTunes or some other software)

2. At that price of iPod you'll get more storage space in other PMP's

3. No FM and other eyecandy features.

In other case I'll vote for Transcend. You'll also get Sony. Creative is also good.

Thanks for the replies.

@krish
FM would be very desirable.
I am not to keen on the shuffle because it does not have even a basic info display, nor does it have FM and less storage for its price point.
@thenvk
Great suggestion. It does come in Pink :)

How is the build quality of Transcend?

Transcend build quality is very good. Comparable to the Samsung, Apple and other mainstream PMP makers.

For 3k, try this - Transcend MP 860 The 4GB model is available only in black, so if you want fancy color, go for the 8GB model available only in white(3.5K).

You can also bring down the price by using CITI coupon

This has a great 2.4" screen capable of playing audio & video, supports wide audio formats, mp4 & flv video, has photo option (sister stuff :)), FM Radio, recording FM / Voice / Line-IN, 22 hours audio battery, microSD card slot, blah blah blah. I recommended this for a friend (He got the 8GB white from eBay for 2820 after CITI coupon, I had an hands-on look - very good build quality, looks, features, UI, especially for the price. Actually it could project as an expensive gifter :D)

Although Smartshoppers.in offers very competitive prices, some items are available for cheaper on eBay.in - so if you're planning to buy online, do a price comparison before you buy.

I bought a Transcend T.Sonic 630 2yr's ago. I'm really satisfied with it. It costed me 2k/2.5k(I dont remember the exact price) for 2GB model.

For any PMP's other than iPod's, I'll vote for Transcend.

my transcend t-310 1gb was bought in 2005 and has lasted me till date although its been relegated to a pen drive now. i've been through all sorts of weather in different parts of the country and a couple of massive accidents but the t-310 hasn't yet got a scratch. transcend has excellent build quality.

you can buy one of these ipod shuffle look alike mp3 players for 300-400rs and get a 2gb mirco sd card and get a pair of pl-11 earphones. within a 1000rs. these have good sound quality and can be used as a card reader/pen drive and supports drag and drop features.

I am curious why dont people go for a cellphone with mp3/fm functionality, many basic celphones by nokia/samsung have awesome sound, the solo mp3 players were talk of past when mp3 wasnt a thing in cellphones.

^^ If you travel a lot, you would've noticed the need. I used to have just a W series SE phone which boasted 20 hours playback, 6 hours talktime, blah blah.. but leaving it in my ears overnight in the train, when I get up to get down, no battery, no calls, no contacts :D and this could leave you in pretty bad situations. Now I've an ipod with 30 hours audio, leave it overnight, get up, get down, call friend for pickup :P

Ha ha.. Same thing happened with me as well. This always made me wonder, why mobile phone music players do not have a sleep function?? Simple yet efficient functionality!

I saw a Chinese MP3 player in my usual cig shop that was about one square-inch with a clip , and cost about Rs.500.

No idea what name it was but it looks just like a shuffle.

I just read you don't want something like this but hey, nobody gonna beat this price :)

^^ I had bought that one for 200 /- when i got a 300 rupee of ebay coupon about an year back , still works good .

Ha! so it can be bought for much cheaper :D

It lasts so long as the battery inside can hold a charge, then you just chuck it out.

Those are 150 bucks on Lamington road.
But they are just too cheap and unreliable to be given as gifts.
:)
I got the Transcend MP860. Great value for the price.
