Looking for a new heatsink fan.

Greetings,

My current heatsink fan is making a hell of a racket. I've tried lubricating it, but that's not helped at all, and the blasted thing makes more noise than my ceiling fan :@ (well, actually, I only just replaced the bearings in that :) ).

I'm still using the stock heatsink and fan combo that came with my Athlon XP. I'm in Chennai and I tried Ritchie street, but was told that I would have to pick up the heatsink as well as the fan, if I wanted a new fan.

Can anyone point me to where I can purchase a new fan in Chennai, or failing that, can some overclocker in Chennai sell me the fan that they packed away with their stock heatsink?

You cant only get the Fan.

The Heatsink always comes with a Fan.

Unless you buy a Third Party Heatsink, i dont think you have any choice.

Oh Great. Thanks for replying, anyway. There's nothing wrong with my current heatsink and I don't overclock so the stock cooling is good enough for me. I just need a little bit less noise!

Looks like the only solution available to me is to stuff cotton up my ears! :(

MAn, you can hear it with you case closed???

Thats some sad case. Lol.

I can hear a distant hiss somewhere. And i have 5 80mm 2500 and 1 92 mm 4200 rpm fan. Lol.

Isnt it a 60mm fan? I think you get them in ritchie street. Dont ask for AMD fans - they dont understand that. Ask for 60mm fans and you should be able to get it. Im going there tomoro, so will post the name of the shop and price of the fan.

Well the case is a Grabit iBox, and yeah, it doesn't dampen the sound much, but it's even louder with the case open. It's just the fan's bearings bearings that are failing and I need a new fan!

Yes, 60 mm is correct. I asked for a `CPU fan' and was told I had to buy the heatsink as well. Would really appreciate you telling me which shop I can get it from.

Just pick up a 60mm Fan. And attached it above the Hs.

OK, will hop over to Ritchie street on Saturday and try again. Maybe then I can remove these cotton buds from my ears :)

The fan that comes with the Stock Heatsink is a Delta 60mm. It isn't too hard to find. Don't throw your stock fan away though.

Saw a Sunon(model number ended in S1) 60mm fan today in Omega Electronics, Ritchie street....He wouldnt tell me the price unless i wanted to buy....But should be less than Rs.100. It was 12V and 1.2W, so thats about 0.1A. That should be plenty powerful at about 23cfm.

But in case you are looking for something more powerful then PM me - my friend happens to have a 12V, 3.6W fan, though im not sure abt the size. It was very small when i saw it so might be 60mm. Its from a company called ADDA.

Raghu.

@ dribbler, Dont forget to buy a three wire 60mm fan, for RPM sensing.

BTW how did you lubricate the exisitng fan as mentioned in ur first post ??

Thanks a lot, Raghu. A Sunon fan should be good enough for me. I'll pick it up on Saturday. I guess I would'nt need more power than that, so thanks for the offer, anyway.

I guess most fans that size come with a motherboard connector, but thanks for the heads up.

I lubricated it by pulling off the label and squeezing a few drops of sewing machine oil into the hole. Thought that would be enough. Was seriously considering soaking it in a cupfull of oil, but now I'll just buy a new fan!!!

Just one drop or maximum 2 drops is enough. over oiling it makes the matter worse.

if you are game for it i suggest you remove the label ...then remove that plastic / metallic washer.doing this the fan blade assembly will come out from the opposite side. clean the shaft of the fan blade assembly. And the brass bearing (a small tube actually) which is on the same part from where you removed that washer.....
reassemble the fan and dont forget to put in that (or a new) washer ...if washer is not in good condition then there will be a "play" in the fan which is one of the reasons for the fan noise.
the fan should be purring silently subsequently ...

Yeah, there's a good article about doing exactly that over here.

Didn't want to go all the way, though! I'm pretty good at taking things apart, but not so hot at putting them back together so they work like they used to - a defect I noticed during my childhood. :ashamed:

I'll try that when I have a fan to spare, though.
