Hi guys,

I am a bit taken aback by the mysterious Rs 1000 charge on my ICICI debit account. So am looking for a change of bank.

Can you please suggest me a bank:

- Good online Netbank
- Widespread ATM network.
- Accepted at major online stores (debit/credit card)
- The minimum balance req to be maintained in the account.

etc, etc.

Thanks,

Karan

I highly recommend Citibank... meets your first 3 requirements, but minimum balance might be an issue (check with the bank anyway). I'm recommending them after using ICICI, HDFC, Canara, Vijaya, ABN, Centurion in the past... Citibank has been going strong for about 5 - 6 years now. There've been screwups, however, things have always been resolved.

All I can say about Citi, is that they are a bunch of lazy arrogant bastards. They also love to send collection agents to collect fees for a card that we had cancelled, because

1. We never used it

2. They did not send statements

After my father asked for an itemized bill, they ran away.

Citibank bankers are overpaid and underworked.

^^ ditto...

citibank all they way...

There is/was an option for a 0 balance suvidha account, but you have/had to pay a yearly fees for that.

^^I had similar issue with standard chartered.

I have accounts in both the bank....

ICICI deducted 850 bucks for not maintaing balance more than 5000 - i am closing that account!

Citibank is costly in its operations - but so far reliable... cant comment on Credit Card...cos i havent used a Citibank Credit card..

It's happened with ICICI and ABN AMRO still keeps sending statements for a cancelled card - and they've sent 2 collection agencies after me, all banks do that not just Citibank. In fact, they sent me a new card 2 months ago after cancelling the original a year ago LOL. If you want to resolve your issues get a hold of a manager in their call center and rest assured, you will see the end of your troubles.

Thanks a lot karan!!:)

I was gonna start a similar thread, mainly coz
1. me got no bank account with ATM:ashamed:
2. upgraditis related transactions inconvenienced many and esp pals whose accounts i used:no:

If its ok with you Karan, then may i request the mods to run a poll on which bank i need to deal with:cool2:
votes from TE members will shed true light on most used bank and will greatly help in any future deals!!

Else will start new thread!!:cool2:

My list, in order of preference-
SBI
HDFC
BoB
UTI
Citi
ICICI
Others- please specify!!

Have had probs with Citi corporate account i had!!
Also now it requires 10k as average monthly/quarterly balance!!:@
Thats a lot of money stuck/wasted!!:P

Many friends and relatives have discontinued ICICI due to billing/charging discrepancies!!:@
So not very keen on that- esp their 'enforcement executives' who pay you a visit for no fault of yours!!

Heard that SBI has improved a lot!!:)
And lowest deposit required!!:ohyeah:

Never heard of any major probs with HDFC!!

So, please help me too Karan and everyone else!!:hap2:

UTI bank is also quite good and has very widest network of ATMs all over india.I have an account there myself for last 5 yrs and has been quite satisfied with thier service.
Min. balance is 5000 and they provide netbanking and i haven't had any problems with accpetance of thier debit card yet...

My Dad uses HDFC for all his business transactions, impeccable I must say whenever I accompanied him to the branch.

Also heard a lot of good things about UTI, check that out as well.

my word would b either stick to icici.........or start with hdfc .......

i have hdfc account they havent cut any money frm my account....may b i takk care of my account alot check it twice a day....also when any cuts r made....i directly call the bank and ask......wht that cut was for..........

btw u need to understand any facilty such bank provide all r charged..........whtever bank say we provide this facility(lik direct payment of telephone bill through account etc)......which tel bill mentions 1%discount is nullify by bank by charging 25 bucks per month on it.......

so i must say dont go for electronic payment of bills...as far as possible......

I had accounts in CITI, ICICI, & HDFC. HDFC I must say was the best, no probs whatsoever from their end....

remember there are a lot of issues to be inquired before you select you bank.

i have used different banks in different locations for last 15 years.

i have had very good experiences with SBI and HDFC banks.

with HDFC bank i am right now holding account since 1996.

if you need online purchse, money transfer, debit card payments and like in my opinion new age private sector banks are way ahead of public sector banks.

i have heard ICICI bank has the maximum number of available options by default when online transactions come in. but some people like me have horrible experiences with them.

so i would recommend HDFC bank, UTI bank, IDBI bank and if you need public sector bank SBI.

i would always stay away from foreign banks as they charge exorbitantly.

regarding charges deducted in two person`s account as mentioned earlier :
each and every private sector bank requires you to maintain stipulated AQB (average quarterly balance) if you fail to do so you end up paying 200-600 rupees permonth.

in my case hdfc bank requires to keep 5000 as AQB and penalty in case of failure is 250 per month. so sometimes if you rely on physical statement only you may end up losing 750 rupees straight away.

regarding no frills accounts : remember those accounts carry a hefty penalty for not pertaining to stipulated conditions and the conditions are very very stupidly absurd. you can not do more than one withdrawal or one deposit transaction in that accounts otherwise they charge 75-100 rs. per transaction.

if you need to keep minimum money blocked then public sector bank SBI is good.

regarding number of ATMs SBI comes first followed by ICICI and then HDFC.

CITI and STAN CHART can never match any of those behemoths in number of ATMs.

Thank you very much for the replies everyone!!

Thats a really long and elaborate post Medpal!!:hap2:
Wil SBI/HDFC/UTI charge me for an online payment to some other bank??

So i narrow my list to SBI, HDFC and UTI!!:D

I request the mods to run a poll!!:cool2:

All those who see this, vote for which bank you would like to deposit cash to, in case you buy something in Market!!:P

If you want cheapest bank then you will have to go for UTI or IDBI.

IDBI has low internet transaction charges(Rs15 for transfering money and none for receiving) and UTI has none AFAIK.

ICICI is not idle for those who does many small transactions every month.

Actually ICICI was started to give loans/financial assistance to small/medium scale industries.

And HDFC for home loans...
