Hi all
Need suggestions for a tab under 12k that meets the following requirements. Any advice appreciated.

- Should excel at displaying PDF's as this is what I want it for primarily
- Android based
- Must have good warranty and support service.
- Not interested in Amazon Kindle

I want to avoid companies like Ainol/iberry etc. that (according to several Indian forums) have terrible service support.

Please don't recommend a tab unless you own it (or have personally used it at some point) yourself as I may have some questions about it.

Also wondering whether I should look for a tab with IPS display or whether tabs with standard display types do a decent enough job when it comes to viewing PDF files. Since I'm buying this for reading, is a 7" size good enough or should I look for an 8-10" tab?

Thanks in advance...

At 12k I don't think there are any other options other than the Ainol, iberry type companies.

I think there is a lenovo tablet for 14k that you can look at but do consider getting something with a IPS screen. Assuming you read in bed and hold it in hand, a screen that doesn't have color shifts and gives you a headache should be preferred

One of the most important things I need to clarify is whether a 7" tab CAN be a decent PDF viewer?

Can existing users of 7" tabs (any brand it doesn't matter) confirm or deny this as it would make my search a LOT easier.

- This is exactly what I need it for, ie. reading while in bed. So you recommend an IPS screen?

I have gone nuts going through reviews on tabs - there are just so many around its unbelievable. I'm apprehensive about buying one because I've never used one myself. Saw another thread in this section related to PDF tabs specifically but it didn't help much.

I'm very wary of Ainol/iberry due to the amount of negative feedback from users in various forums regarding after sales service been downright pathetic to completely non-existent. If it weren't for that, I would have bought one of those brands for sure.

One very odd thing I noticed about tabs in India - a lot of them seem to be sold online exclusively. They dont seem to have official stores for them. Croma and Reliance stores possibly stock some models of very specific brands. However for a majority of tabs there dont seem to be stores selling them only online sites.

I would have thought that tabs are the kind of product one would want to "touch/look/test" before buying? Or is that just me?

Going through reviews of various tabs has made me realize that there's another feature I would like (though not absolutely necessary) for my tab which is the ability to play Full HD video without dropping frames.

Which one did you finalize on in the end ? I see Samsung's launched the Tab2 without cellular for 14k

Under 12k and pdf's is a crap shoot.

pdf files not too big it works, not too much graphics it works. Anything else forget it.

under 12k means tier-3 components so slower and lousy battery performance.

14k you're at tier 2 components, better but still not optimal.

I looked at a funbook 10.1 which was under 10k, and single processor is laggy in rendering even 2MB pdf files, the demo files that were loaded on it. Then tried a iball 9.7" at under 15k, this one had issues with the touch screen so could not evaluate it.

If you've got the money go with tier 1 ie samsung, google or apple. If not then save up until you can. Otherwise you get a product that will end up in the drawer after a couple of months.

For me tablet should be general purpose not specfic purpose and you will only get that with tier 1.

@bottle

I was looking at 10" tabs only so the Samsung Tab 2 was not in the running.

The one I selected has a 1.5Ghz Dual Core CPU, a Quad Core GPU, 16GB RAM, and IPS screen and a Li-Po 7600 mAh battery plus a nice leather cover all at a price of Rs.12,119/- inclusive of shipping.

Good enough for me.

This is the one I have settled on and will order today -

Spice MI 1010 Price in India | Spice Tablet Reviews Online - Infibeam.com

Don't know whats up with FK these days.

First they conceded book pricing to Infi and now its seems its electronic items as well.

Really disappointing considering I prefer FK to Infi...

A video box opening clip of the product (by someone else not me) in case anyone's interested.

Another one with benchmarking included -

Good specs for the price. Only negative is speakers at the back, why do they do that, your ears are in the front isn't it. IPS screen with 16GB RAM is very good.

What you need to do now is find out who the chinese OEM is and whether there is any chance of custom roms. The lesser known units don't get much development in this space.

Otherwise this is the best i've seen at the price point. In another 3 months another will beat it and so on. Very fast moving segment.

Good enough for me.

Good enough depends on what you use it for.

That review though lengthy did not mention pdf performance at all. In fact i find they rarely ever do. They talk about games & video, leaving me with the impression that these are the only two things people in this price point are interested in. The video because its a cheaper substitute than a tv or laptop and lasts longer.

What is the performance with pdf files of sizes 5MB, 10MB & 20 MB

Start swiping the pages and see how fast they render etc.

As for responsiveness in the desktop yes very fast, on various apps the performance seemed acceptable apart from one of the games where it would not respond when he tried to pinch & zoom.

Am a bit sceptical about his battery life claims, i imagine 4-6 hours heavy use is the best you will get with it. cheaper components means less efficient so even if they have a bigger battery does not mean it lasts longer. It will last longer than a smaller battery sure, but not when compared when a tier-1 device which will squeeze out couple more hours.

I had looked at iball's 14k offering which had similar specs. The problem i found with that is the screen protector it shipped with actually affected the response. The sales guy would not let me remove it.

Screen protectors on tier-3 & tier-2 units is a waste, you will only get the required performance without them.

I thought this was kind of odd as well. However according to reviews, speakers are decently loud. In any case, I would use a headphone so this doesnt concern me too much.

As this is my first tablet, I am clueless about tablets as such. How do you advise I go about this finding out who the OEM is? Is there some hardware code/serial database or something where one can find out who the OEM might be? Any help appreciated.

Yes, I found the lack of info on the topic of PDF read/display speeds disappointing as this is my primary requirement for the tablet. I would have thought they would have some sort of default benchmark for this sort of thing. The only "clue" I found on the topic is the thinkdigit video review where the guy states the tablet is good for reading books. See the below clip at 2:04 seconds.

The digit video review I linked above (see 1:32 onwards) claims they got 6.5 hours of battery time on their continuous video playback test with full volume, full brightness and WiFi on. What I'm looking for is 2-3 hours of reading time so I think I should be okay with the battery. Plus, as I don't intend to use WiFi at all (this will be an completely "offline" tablet so to speak) there should be some saving there as well.

Plus, the NDTV guys have also reviewed the tablet 2 days ago and claimed a battery life of 8 hours in their video playback test with full brightness. They go on to say that in their view, the tablet would easily give 8-10 hours of usage on a single charge.

BTW, this product does reportedly have some issues based on reviews I found on the net.

Firstly, more than one review has stated it has some back light bleeding issues along the edges though they claim it was minor.

Similarly, charging problems have been reported in more than one review as well. Apparently it takes a significant time to charge the tablet though its reported to have a good battery life once fully charged. The fact that it uses a proprietary charger (rather than USB charging) kind of puts me off it a bit.

Third, the video link I posted in my earlier post (the one with the benchmark) had a very odd finding. Apparently the guy who reviewed it said the CPU's were clocked at 1.2Ghz and not 1.5 Ghz as they are claimed to be. This kind of worries me. Is this normal? Are the CPU's being throttled down to 1.2Ghz due to low load or is this a problem?

It just has to become the std, i cannot think of any reasons not to put the speakers in the front. The only budget tab i saw that did this was the funbook infinity. More should do it. The only thing speakers at the back are good for is to annoy the person in front of you who cannot see your tab. Speakers on the side is an even worse design because your hands will muffle it. So people should defnitely not buy a tab that has this.

As this is my first tablet, I am clueless about tablets as such. How do you advise I go about this finding out who the OEM is? Is there some hardware code/serial database or something where one can find out who the OEM might be? Any help appreciated.
Then do not bother for the next six months. Get to know the capabilities of your tablet and shortcomings if any. This will give time for more people to buy it and start experimenting. Thing with these custom roms is you are entirely dependent on others, they may or may not do a good job, there will be bugs and certain things might not work. The simplest need for it is to remove unwanted apps to free up more space or with locked tabs. But since you have 16GB you will not face problems too soon.

Another might be to add USB 3G dongles and you need to install the required driver into the kernel to get that particular dongle to work. Its a lot of work and you and a handful of others are the only support you will get. Skip it for as long as possible or when you have a very clear need.

This digit review was better than the previous one. Tells you exactly where potential problems are. Its clear that Spice have used a better quality touch screen in this model compared to others in the same price range. But it still did not show any PDF performance.

This one is with a nexus, ok its quad core but main question is how far away is your dual core pdf responsiveness in comparison. You can see a 500 pg book is no problem and the tab is very responsive. Now that is ideal.

The digit video review I linked above (see 1:32 onwards) claims they got 6.5 hours of battery time on their continuous video playback test with full volume, full brightness and WiFi on.
They don't say what resolution the video was.

Thats good. Two things you need to know about any Li-Po battery if you want it to last.

- Don't charge it up to 100%, pull it when its 90-95%
- Keep the discharge short before recharge, say, recharge at 50% rather than letting it run down to 10%.

Given your use profile the battery should be adequate for your needs. If you can get through a typical 8 hr day with it then you have a useful tablet.

Plus, the NDTV guys have also reviewed the tablet 2 days ago and claimed a battery life of 8 hours in their video playback test with full brightness. They go on to say that in their view, the tablet would easily give 8-10 hours of usage on a single charge.

Long time to charge is a good thing for the battery as it puts less stress on it. My samsung charger is a 2A charger very fast but i bet the battery will die sooner.

Heh, lower clocked CPU explains the longer battery life. At the price point they have to be as competitive as possible, the low end tabs always have the latest OS on them. But that will be the only OS you will get unless you figure out how to install the successor android OS. I'm still on ICS, did not see any need for JB just yet. HC --> ICS was a much more signficant change then ICS -> JB.

If you do not have any performance issues then nothing to worry about you will be ok, otherwise you will have to root it to get more performance. Your call. Sleep on it.

The only remaining question i have what about service centers in your city. Are there any ? how easy will repairs or maintenance be should you need any.

The fact that OS of cheaper tablets cant be upgraded via new Android OS updates is actually VERY disappointing and something I was not aware of until very recently. :(

I guess the low end tab manufacturers want you to just dump your old tablet and buy a new one.

What about brands like Karbonn etc? Can their tablets be officially (or unofficially) upgraded or is this limited only to the well known high end brands? I ask because the Karbonn Cosmic was actually my second choice.

Thats one of the first things I checked. They have a service centre in my area (12 Kms from where I live).

As for how easy repairs/maintenance will be - no idea at all considering this is only their 2nd tablet and a fairly new product.

Also, thanks for all your feedback...

Oh, its an old practice. Even with cheap PCs as well as some OEM brands (Dell, gateway etc) the peripherals rarely provide device drivers for an updated OS. They will use some cheap & overly integrated component here & there. Result is when the OS comes out, those devices will not work with it. Building your own with custom quality parts is what lots of people do here but that's not an option available with a tablet (for now).

With tier-1 you may get the successor OS, so just one upgrade and then they will EOL the product. Just look at the warranties being offered, everybody is giving just one year. Don't know about apple maybe theirs is longer. So the company isn't going to stand behind the product after. This is a hyper competitive segment and new products come out every quarter. You got a competitive priced product so the manufacturer has had to shave corners any where & every where possible.

There is one thing i forgot to mention, if your tab is underclocked there is probably a good reason for it. It might be that it overheats at 1.5Ghz. More heat is bad for battery & component life. So best to keep it at the rate it came with. Otherwise its only a 12k product that is expected to last you 2-3 years.

What about brands like Karbonn etc? Can their tablets be officially (or unofficially) upgraded or is this limited only to the well known high end brands? I ask because the Karbonn Cosmic was actually my second choice.
If the device drivers are availiable then you can roll your own, but that will take considerable effort. Here is where knowing the chinese OEM comes in.

But why do you care ? If your needs are not all that demanding other than to brag you should not need the latest & greatest.

Another thing with these cheap tabs is when you look at the price and then the specs (on paper) it can be a very attractive proposition. But i think you should never buy anything unless you get to play with it first. When i went to croma or reliance store i started moving my finger back & forth on the home screen very fast to see what the response was like. Its not just about CPU but also the quality of the touch screen. With cheaper tabs the touch screen did not meet standards for tier-1 so it has some defects. Where those defects are is anybody's guess. If you test it before you part with your money then things should be ok.

Then they have no pdf files available so you need to take them with you on a flash drive and DEMAND they bring out the OTG cable. Sometimes they have a crap pdf reader or none so have to install an app. There is next to no attention given by the salespeople for budget tabs but if you look at the flasgship models then the salespeople start to become very accomodating.

Thats one of the first things I checked. They have a service centre in my area (12 Kms from where I live).

Good, then if the battery dies you can get a replacement. How easy it is to maintain is down to the service center. Sometimes these cheap tabs are difficult to get into. YMMV. But its better than having to send it to another part of the country and wait a month (provided they have the part) or even longer.

The only thing left for you to do is tell us what the PDF performance is like. PDF is a very tricky animal so subjective depending on how complex the files are. To keep it simple see with file sizes 5, 10, & 20 MB and if possible even a scanned document. How close does it come to the nexus vid above ?

If this acceptable then your tab is strong comeptition to a 7" samsung tab 2.

Even i am looking to get a tab for reading pdf and chm files. the thing is these are large books ranging from 2.5k to 5k pages with lot of decent resolution radiology images. Total size of these books is in range of 500MB to 750MB. i like to mark these books for future quick revision when need may arise. even on laptop (i7 second gen) saving these changes(highlights and underlines, sometimes notes) takes 3-4 sec saving time when i close them. i am really not sure if these will be handled efficiently by tabs. i am looking for 7 or 8" tabs. Am eyeing upcoming note8 cause of its specs in hardware.. is it going to be good enough..am not sure. Considering the price i would like to know if some one here has experience with large image intensive books on tabs..

ARM does not have the processing power to deal with books of this size, you will need to look at windows 'touch sensitive' laptops. Course the battery on those is like ~3 hours but you have the power.

PDF will be harder to do than just images. If you can covert or extract images things might be different.

You can always do a test, just go to any samsung shop and ask to see their flag ship model, take a microsd card with your docs/images on it. USB pen drive requires a samsung specific USB adapter to use which they might not be willing to provide.

I've got a 10.1 which has same specs, it struggles with some pdf files of 20MB size from archive.org. These are scans of books.

It isn't so much the CPU that has to be powerful but the GPU and even 4 cores isn't enough here. Yeah it will render but the time it takes does not make it usable. Very hit & miss.

Nothing like on a laptop thats for sure.
