Okay, this question has been asked enough times that I think we can have a single thread/sticky with the correct info for everyone concerned :)

Here are your options if you want a Vista 64-bit DVD:

1. Buy Vista Ultimate. Its the only edition that comes with 32 AND 64-bit disks by default.

NOT recommended because of the higher cost and the fact that for normal use, the Home Premium edition is more than sufficient.

2. For any other version of Vista, you need to buy a legitimate copy (32-bit of course). The, contact MS support (phone/email/online) and ask them to ship you a corresponding 64-bit DVD. You WILL be charges DVD + shipping + handling charges for this. Should be around 1k?

See: Windows Vista Alternate Media

3. RECOMMENDED Method:

One thing you NEED to know. Serial key etc for both 32 and 64-bit WILL be the same. All you need is installation media.

Hence, simplest solution:

a. Go get yourself a normal legit 32-bit RETAIL copy.

b. Get a copy of the 64-bit installation disc from a friend OR just get your hands on a 30-day trial version of Vista OR simply download a copy of the Vista 64-bit DVD from one of the many sources out there.

c. Install using this copy BUT with your legitimate product key.

And Voila! Legit 64-bit Vista.

MISC:

1. MS will NOT supply 64-bit discs for OEM copies of Vista (for example, the one you get with laptops preinstalled). For OEM copies, please contact your manufacturer and check IF they will provide you with one (pretty rare I think). You will probably STILL be able to use step 3 above to install the same. So long as the serial is yours, there shouldnt be any issue of 'authenticity' as such.

2. Since there is only one serial, you CANNOT install 32-bit AND 64-bit versions on 2 different machines at the same time.

@mods: Sticky please :P

Thanks, very nicely put, reps added :)

Quick questions, I'm using a 64-bit Ultimate copy (Not legit), which has been blacked out and is asking for activation.

Now can I purchase Home Premium and enter that serial key so that it'll automatically downgrade to Home Premium without a re-install?

I'm basically trying to avoid the reinstall as there are too many programs and settings to move.

Nicely put indeed. Repped.

@Anish: Don't think it works that way, there's no downgrade path from Ultimate to Home premium, so reinstall is the only solution.

I thought you needed a 64bit Vista DVD; was gonna almost post that why you din't ask me then realized it was something different :bleh:

Ideally, the installer for all versions is the same. All that varies is the key you enter into it.

However, once you have activated it as vista ultimate, I dont know if it will allow a downgrade.

Worth trying anyway :P So try it ;)

Option: Call up MS support. Tell them you installed a trial version of Vista Ultimate and now want to buy home premium. So can you upgrade the same installation.

Yes, it varies OEM to OEM. +, it may also depend on the particular lappy model you buy. business series/XPS owners may get better service here ;)

Else, like I said, get hold of a copy and use our OEM key :) It will work :D
